Slice of Light Gallery will be closing its doors permanently on Sunday February 15, 2026.

The past two and a half years we’ve spent in this lovely city have been absolutely wonderful. The storefront has enabled customers, followers, and new friends to experience the visual and emotional impact of our prints in person. We’re so lucky and grateful to have been an active part of the Santa Barbara art community.

We will continue to offer our limited edition prints (and other merchandise) online at sliceoflight.com as we have been doing since we opened back in July of 2023.

For those wondering why the brick and mortar gallery is closing, it was a decision that my team and I came to after months of deliberation. Ultimately, we felt that Santa Barbara is not quite the right fit for us. We agreed that it would be better to invest our time and resources into our original business—our online store and gallery—rather than focusing so much energy on just one community, even as wonderful as Santa Barbara is.

As the next couple weeks come and go, and the doors of our gallery finally close, we would just like to say “Thank You” to anyone who has visited us. Every compliment our images receive is another drop of fuel in the engines of our photographers, who work tirelessly to show us the beauty of both our Earth and the cosmos beyond. Thank you, everyone, for supporting us.

Closing Sale - 15% off All In-Stock Prints

From now until we close (Feb. 15th) all of our in-stock limited edition prints will be 15% off. The discount will be applied automatically at checkout—no code needed. Link in description.

As a “niche within a niche” 😅 we here at Slice of Light Gallery conduct a lot of guest education.

Some important (wrong) assumptions we hear from guests:
1. These are AI images
2. These are from Hubble/NASA/James Webb
3. These are inkjet metal prints
4. These are paintings
5. These are backlit

Here are some truths:
1. These are real photographs of space!
2. These are all shot and processed by award winning astrophotographer
3. These are archival dye sublimation prints by
4. These are limited edition photographic prints
5. These prints are lit the same way you would light a classic archival painting

Thank you to everyone who stopped by booth D12 at this past week’s Seattle Art Fair 2025!

The show was packed every single day and we got to hear many nice comments from guests. Below we’ve listed some of our favorites:

🌌”Love the name of the gallery”
🌌”Striking”
🌌”Gorgeous”
🌌”Calming”
🌌”Looks mythical”
🌌”Blown away”
🌌”[The medium is] very effective”

Besides comments, there are a recurring set of questions we are asked due to our niche, so below they are listed along with their answers:

Q. “Are these actual photographs?”
A. Yes! These are all photographs taken by our award-winning photographers J K Lovelace and Ben Coffman.

Q. “Is this NASA/JWST/Hubble?”
A. Nope! All of our astrophotographs are shot by amateur astronomer J K Lovelace with his own equipment. The popular belief is that this level of quality can only be achieved by big institutions, so a big part of J K Lovelace’s mission is to raise awareness that space is accessible to all—all you really need to start with is a good star tracker and a smartphone.

Q. “What is dye sublimation?”
A. Dye sublimation is a process by which solid specialty inks are vaporized, such that the colors are baked-in to the aluminum substrate, and not just sitting on top. That’s why our prints appear so vibrant and won’t crack or peel over time.

Q. “Are these backlit?”
A. Nope, the nature of the medium is what gives the prints their vibrancy—no outlets or wiring needed!

Q. “Are these limited edition?”
A. Yes! All of our prints are limited edition unless expressly stated in their product description (as of July 2025, we have no open editions).
