THIS DAY IN RAILROAD HISTORY -- GOLDEN SPIKE ON MAY 10, 1869.
Today is the 155th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad and the Golden Spike ceremony held at Promontory Summit on May 10, 1869. Union Pacific locomotive #119 and the Central Pacific Jupiter locomotive were drawn together face-to-face on Promontory Summit to celebrate the event. A golden spike was driven by Leland Stanford to join the first transcontinental rails across the United States connecting the Central Pacific from Sacramento and the Union Pacific from Omaha.
