Happy Semiquincentennial, America!

As we count down to The Fourth of July 2026, The History Center of San Luis Obispo County wants to celebrate the 250th Birthday of The United States of America with periodic looks at what was happening 250 years ago today:

On May 29, 1776, Massachusetts delegate to the Continental Congress John Adams wrote to Boston Lawyer Benjamin Hichborn stating:

Unanimity in this Time of Calamity and Danger is of great Importance. You ask my sentiments of the political System to be adopted. My opinion I am very certain will not be followed. We have able Men in the Colony, but I am much afraid they will not be heard...

I wish I could be at Home, at this important Period. But you will remember that all the other Colonies have Constitutions to frame- and what is of infinitely great Delicacy, Intricacy, and Importance, the Continent has a Constitution to form….I have been here four Months, during which Time I have never once been on Horseback, and have found but little Time to walk. Such uninterrupted Attention to Cares and Perplexities of various Kinds, is enough to destroy a more robust Body than mine….

The Moment I can see every Colony in Possession and actual Exercise of all the Powers of Government, and a Confederation well settled for all the Colonies under a Congress with Powers clearly defined and limited; and Sufficient Preparation and Provisions made for Defense against the Force which is coming against Us; that Moment I shall return to my family; from which I have been too long divorced.

And that’s the way it was 250 years ago today.

On May 28, 1776, General George Washington issued urgent orders as the Continental Army prepared for a possible British attack on New York City. That invasion would occur less than 3 months later. Washington directed every regiment to remain under arms at alarm posts, ready for inspection and immediate action at any hour. Troops were warned that alarms could sound without notice, and strict discipline was enforced throughout the camps. Soldiers were forbidden to leave parade grounds without written permission from commanding officers. The orders also addressed court-martial proceedings and officer assignments as Washington strengthened defenses around New York City. Following the British evacuation of Boston, the commander understood that a major campaign against the city was rapidly approaching.

On May 27, 1776, leaders of the Continental Congress staged a dramatic military parade in Philadelphia for a delegation of twenty-one Iroquois representatives from four of the Six Nations. Hoping to secure neutrality or support against Britain, Congress ordered two to three thousand patriot troops to march before the visitors. George Washington, John Hancock, and Horatio Gates observed the display alongside members of Congress. The delegates, staying above the Assembly Room in the Pennsylvania State House, now called Independence Hall, witnessed America’s growing military confidence firsthand. Despite the impressive show of force, the effort achieved mixed results, as four Iroquois nations later sided with Britain during the Revolutionary War.

On May 26, 1776, the American Revolution had barely begun when John Adams, serving in the Continental Congress at Philadelphia, wrote a private letter to James Sullivan warning against expanding voting rights. Adams predicted that easing voter qualifications would unleash endless demands for equality. He warned that women would seek the vote, young men at the age of 12 would insist their rights were ignored, and propertyless citizens would demand equal political power. Adams feared such changes would erase traditional social distinctions. His letter revealed a striking contradiction of the Revolution itself: while Patriots demanded liberty from Britain, many Founding Fathers still believed self-government belonged mainly to propertied white men of their era.

On May 25, 1776, the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and considered a request from deputies representing four nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. Formed long before European contact under the Great Law of Peace by the Seneca, Onondaga, Cayuga, Oneida, and Mohawk tribes, and later joined by the Tuscarora, the Confederacy faced growing uncertainty as war spread between Britain and the colonies. Many Native nations feared colonial expansion and trusted British promises to limit settlement on tribal lands. The Revolution divided the Confederacy itself. The Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Seneca supported Britain, while the Oneida and Tuscarora sided with the Patriots. Congress granted the representatives an official audience the following Monday.

On May 22, 1776, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail stating:

Your Sentiments of the Duties We owe to our Country, are such as become the best of Women, and the best of Men. Among all the Disappointments, and Perplexities, which have fallen to my share in Life, nothing has contributed so much to support my Mind, as the choice Blessing of a Wife, whose Capacity enabled her to comprehend, and whose pure Virtue obliged her to approve the Views of her Husband. This has been the cheering Consolation of my Heart, in my most solitary, gloomy and disconsolate Hours. In this remote Situation, I am deprived in a great Measure of this Comfort. Yet I read, and read again your charming Letters, and they serve me, in some faint degree as a substitute for the Company and Conversation of the Writer.

On May 21, 1776, General George Washington departed New York City for Philadelphia, leaving Major-General Israel Putnam in command of American defenses. Washington stopped overnight in Perth Amboy, the strategically important port city along Raritan Bay and the former capital of East Jersey. New Jersey was originally 2 proprietary colonies that in 1702 were united under the crown of Queen Ann. Though many residents supported English rule, Washington recognized the town’s military value in controlling movement between New York and Philadelphia. Originally called Amboy, the city had been renamed Perth Amboy in 1686 after the Duke of Perth. Washington’s inspection later influenced Revolutionary War maneuvers across New Jersey. When British General William Howe withdrew there in 1777, Washington repositioned his forces, helping spark the Battle of Short Hills.

On May 20, 1776, Philadelphia witnessed dramatic revolutionary mob action outside the State House, now known as Independence Hall. Despite pounding rain, nearly four thousand citizens crowded the yard, furious with Pennsylvania’s conservative Assembly and its hesitation toward independence from Britain. Inspired by the 2nd Continental Congress’s call to suppress royal authority four days earlier, radicals demanded action. The massive gathering declared the Assembly incompetent and forced its leaders to surrender to what speakers called “the Authority of the People.” Protesters then called for a provincial convention to draft a new democratic constitution. The uprising shifted power from colonial elites to ordinary citizens forever, paving the way for Pennsylvania’s radical Constitution and America’s independence 6 1/2 weeks later.

And that’s the way it was 250 years ago today.

On May 19, 1776 in Boston Harbor, the Battle of Shirley Gut became an early American naval triumph. Just two days earlier, Captain James Mugford captured the British powder ship Hope, delivering 1,500 barrels of gunpowder to the Continental Army. But while returning through Shirley Gut, the schooners Franklin and Lady Washington ran aground. That evening, British regulars in small boats launched a fierce attack. Outnumbered American sailors fought hand-to- hand for more than thirty minutes, finally driving the British back. Captain Mugford was mortally wounded, urging his men, “Don’t give up the vessel!” He became the battle’s only American casualty, and the victory secured desperately needed supplies during the Revolutionary War.

On May 18, 1776, The Battle of the Cedars erupted near Montreal toward the end of theContinental Army’s failed invasion of Quebec. Captain George Forster lead British regulars, Canadian militia, and Iroquois warriors against an American-held fort west of the city. After demanding surrender and receiving refusal, fighting began. Brigadier General Benedict Arnold had stationed troops there weeks earlier after reports of British and Native military activity. The next day, the American detachment surrendered. Reinforcements arriving the following day were quickly captured as well. Negotiations between Forster and Arnold eventually secured the prisoners’ release, though a proposed exchange of British prisoners collapsed when the Second Continental Congress rejected the agreement during the continuing conflict.

On May 15, 1776, Virginia took a decisive step toward American independence. Meeting in Williamsburg, the Fifth Virginia Convention unanimously instructed its delegates in Philadelphia to propose that the colonies become “free and independent states,” ending all allegiance to the British Crown. As the first North American English colony established, the most populous and wealthiest of the 13 colonies, and thus, the most influential colony, Virginia’s decision carried enormous weight and broke the deadlock over independence. On the same day, Virginia leaders began drafting a new constitution and Declaration of Rights, rejecting royal authority, and effectively establishing Virginia as a self-governing state.
