Hands Gallery has been offering local residents and visitors the very best selection of fine contemporary crafts and one-of-a-kind gifts for over 20 years. The Hands Icons, No. 04: The self-turning globes. 🌎

If you’ve ever stood in Hands staring at one of these trying to figure out how on earth is that thing moving?… you’re definitely not the first.

We’ve carried these self-turning globes for over 25 years, and they still have a way of stopping people in their tracks.

No cords. No batteries. They use the light around them for power, with a little help from the Earth’s magnetic field to keep them slowly turning all on their own.

Which, after 25+ years, still feels a little bit like magic.

Some Hands Icons earn their spot because they’ve been here forever. Others because customers never stop asking about them.

35 years, in one window. 🤍

For our September window, we wanted to create something that felt a little different — a look back at the people, the art, and the many chapters that have made Hands what it is today.

We went digging through the archives, pulling out old photographs of Hands through the years and the people who have helped shape it along the way. At the center of it all is the work of former Hands owner Trace Feltman, whose pottery feels especially fitting to bring back into the window for this milestone.

There’s something really special about seeing all of these pieces of our history together — old photographs, familiar faces, beautiful handmade work, and 35 years of stories layered into one space.

This is the window that will carry us into our official 35th anniversary on September 25th, and we couldn’t imagine a better way to celebrate where we are than by honoring a little bit of where we’ve been.

35 years of Hands. 35 years of art, people, and community. And so many stories still to come. 🖤

Three lucky sevens.

For over 30 years, 777 Higuera has been more than our address. It’s the number printed on our bags, written on receipts, given to customers over the phone, and the place generations of SLOcals have known to find us.

Seven has long been considered a lucky number—and 777, if you believe in signs, is often associated with being on the right path. Being exactly where you’re meant to be.

And after more than three decades here, we can’t help but think there’s a little magic in that.

Businesses have changed. Downtown has changed. Hands has changed, too. But somehow, all these years later, you can still find us right here:

Individually hand-knotted freshwater pearls, silk thread, antiqued charms—and no two ever quite the same.

These one-of-one necklaces are handmade by Debra Feltman, one of the original owners of Hands Gallery, making this Icon especially close to our history.

It’s one of those pieces that feels unmistakably Hands: a little unexpected, beautifully handmade, and completely unique to the person who takes it home.

As we count down to 35 years, we’re looking back at the pieces that have become part of the story along the way—and this one quite literally connects us to the beginning. 🤍

A little hand in a place that has held so many of our family’s memories. 🤎

We’re officially one week away from 35 years of Hands Gallery, which means I have approximately one week to share about a month’s worth of things I still want to show you. 😂

So consider this your warning: we’re about to get a little sentimental, a little nostalgic, and very Hands-heavy around here.

There are still icons to revisit, stories to tell, tiny details around the shop you may have never noticed, a few familiar faces to hear from, and 35 years to celebrate.

POST 7/35 — spend the day with us (well… with Bailey)

Remember when we said we were going to post 35 times for 35 years of Hands? And remember when Post 7 was supposed to happen on August 28? 😅

Well, hopefully this nearly three-minute vlog was worth the wait because apparently it took us approximately two weeks to edit it.

Come along for a very normal day of dropping off Walt, styling a jewelry look, discussing giant slugs with strangers, attempting to organize the card wall, actually organizing the card wall three hours later, ringing up lots of you, and doing the very glamorous duties that come with closing a retail store.

And don’t worry—we meant it when we said 35 posts for 35 years. All 35 ARE happening. So prepare yourselves to be sufficiently spammed as we catch up. 🤍

If you’ve ever walked down Higuera and referred to us as “the clock store”… we heard you!😂

These whimsical wall clocks have been hanging in the very first display niche inside our doors since the early 2000s, making them one of those pieces that has quietly become part of the Hands experience.

For more than two decades, they’ve greeted customers as they walk in, gone home as gifts, and apparently become memorable enough to give us an unofficial second name.

35 years of Hands means looking back at the things that became icons somewhere along the way—and these definitely earned their spot. ❤️
