Artists are casting their own sheet glass again, and it's changing what they can make

There's a piece in the current issue of Glass: The UrbanGlass Quarterly that's been sitting with me. Managing editor Sahana Ramakrishnan writes about a small but growing group of artists — Elliot Walker, Jocelyne Prince, Romina Gonzalez, David King, Liesl Schubel - who've stopped buying their sheet glass and started making it themselves.

That's a bigger deal than it sounds. Sheet glass is one of those materials most of us just treat as a given, you order it, you cut it, you work with it. But a handful of artists are going back to "extinct" artisanal methods to produce their own sheets, which means they get to control color, texture, and thickness at the source instead of working within whatever the supplier offers. It's the difference between cooking with a spice blend someone else made and grinding your own.

I like this as a reminder that "innovation" in glass doesn't always mean new tech — sometimes it means picking up a technique the industry left behind because it wasn't efficient, and deciding efficiency isn't the point.

If you want the full story, it's worth the read: Glass Quarterly, Issue 182 "Elemental". -

Established in New York City in 1977, UrbanGlass fosters experimentation and advances the use and critical understanding of glass as a creative medium.
