Happy Halloween, Fleetsters!
How did the Madagascar hissing cockroach get its name? Well, it hisses, of course. But how it hisses is a little weird. The giant insect forces gas through tiny breathing pores called spiracles on its thorax and abdomen. The cockroaches hiss when surprised, when challenging other cockroaches to a fight and when trying to attract mates.
Eriovixia gryffindori
Just when you thought science couldn't get any cooler! Indian scientists have found a new species of a dry-foliage mimicking araneid, or more commonly known as a spider. They named it Eriovixia gryffindori, because it looks so much like the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter. The scientists thought the Harry-Potter-inspired name would be a wonderful way to draw attention to an often neglected group of organisms—and J. K. Rowling couldn't agree more! What do you think, Fleetsters?

November 2016's Supermoon
The moon is a familiar sight, brightening dark nights and reminding us of space exploration. But, what's so special about today's moon? When a full moon makes its closest pass to Earth in its orbit, it becomes a perigee-syzygy, commonly known as a supermoon. At perigee, the moon can be as much as 14% closer to Earth and appear much larger in diameter. Because it is larger, the full moon shines 30% more moonlight onto the Earth. This month, the moon is especially "super" for two reasons: it is the only supermoon this year to be completely full, and it is the closest moon to Earth since 1948. The moon won’t be this super again until 2034! Via NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration
