Have you ever noticed the dog hiding in this Salvador Dalí painting?

For , we’re taking a closer look at Dalí’s “The Hallucinogenic Toreador,” where a Dalmatian is camouflaged within the landscape. Drawn from a photograph by Ronald C. James published in a 1965 issue of LIFE magazine, the spotted canine is just one of the painting’s many visual illusions.

one city, two visions 👁️🏙️

The places Salvador Dalí encountered often transformed the way he saw the world. More than 25 years separate these two works—one imagined, one observed.

In 1938, Dalí imagined Manhattan through the symbolic lens of "The Angelus" (top image), transforming its skyline into towering, dreamlike forms. By 1964, after years of living and working in America, he returned to New York's skyline—this time inspired by firsthand experience, filtered through his unmistakable imagination (bottom image).

Together, these works reveal not just a changing city, but an evolving artist. See these and more when you visit "Dalí in America"—now on view.
