PENNY LANE, Beatles Museum is the brainchild of a long time Dunedin resident and humanitarian who considers the time is right to share his eclectic collection of Beatles memorabilia covering several decades dating back to 1961...from Yellow Submarine paraphernalia to Beatles puppets and pins. This exhibit of Beatles memorabilia is curated by Colin Bissett who grew up in Liverpool, England, where the Beatles started, and who enjoyed seeing performances at the Cavern Club and the Casbah Coffee Club in the early sixties before they became a world-wide phenomenon.

🎭 ON THIS DAY IN BEATLES HISTORY 🎭

On October 17, 1979, "BEATLEMANIA" played its final Broadway performance. It was a concert-style show billed as a “rockumentary” going by the tagline “Not the Beatles, but an incredible simulation.” For nearly 2.5 years the show let audiences relive the music of The Beatles years after the band had broken up.

There was no plot and no script to speak of. Four performers played the songs live, while photos, film and images from the era lit up the stage and followed the story of the decade. Audiences filled the Winter Garden Theatre for more than 1,000 performances, and touring productions carried the show across the country.

Then came the lawsuit.

That year Apple Corps, the company founded by The Beatles, took the show producers to court. The question wasn’t the music. It was who owned the Beatles’ names, images and fame, and who got to profit from them. The fight lasted until 1986, when a judge ruled in Apple’s favor. The case set the definitive legal standard for how tribute acts operate today.

Decades later, the tour jacket pictured here, worn by a cast member of the show, is a small piece of a big story: a Beatles tribute that was beloved by audiences and challenged in court.

Did you get it right?! On October 12, 1965, The Beatles stepped into EMI Studios to start tracking their landmark album, Rubber Soul. The very first song they laid down during that afternoon session was John Lennon's "Run for Your Life". They nailed the rhythm track and vocal overdubs in just five takes. Interestingly, even though it was the first song recorded for the project, it ended up being placed as the very last track on the final album! Check back next week for a new question!

Sixty-three years ago tonight, a word was born.
October 13, 1963: the Beatles top the bill on Sunday Night at the London Palladium. Fifteen million people watch on television. Fans mob the street outside. By morning, the papers are reaching for a new word to describe what just happened.
Beatlemania.
Sixty-three years later, Beatlemania has a new home: downtown St. Petersburg, just one block off Central Avenue. Browse our exhibits and you'll feel the excitement. It never really went away.

We’re ready for you, St. Pete.

We are proud to announce that the doors of Penny Lane Beatles Museum have opened for business! We are the only dedicated museum to The Beatles in the entire United States.

We come from a fan-based mission of preserving Beatles memorabilia that invites everyone to discover, remember, and enjoy the most defining force in modern music history, and to keep this important piece of cultural history alive.

Our regular business hours will begin this Wednesday, October 14th. We will be open Wednesdays - Sundays 10:00am - 4:00pm.

Experience the love, laughter, and lore of all the things that made Beatlemania so popular. Relive those days and share it with future generations. Mark your calendar and bring someone who needs to see this.

Admission: $15

Today, John Lennon would have turned 86.
In one of our cabinets sits a pair of his glasses. Round frames. Small.
Visitors walk the whole museum, and this is the piece that stops them. Well-traveled fans. First-timers. Kids who only know the round silhouette.
Everyone pauses for a second.
Maybe because glasses are how someone sees the world. And nobody saw it quite like John.
Happy birthday, John. The music plays for you today, the way it will every day in our St. Pete museum.
