Woodson African American Museum, was founded in 2006. The mission of The Woodson is two-fold:

1) To preserve, present, and interpret African American history and to engage a broad and diverse audience through these activities.

2) To promote an understanding among various groups that comprise the St. Petersburg community to enhance our ability as a society to respect, value diversity, and foster equal rights and social justice.

On this date in 1975, Adam Wade hosted the first episode of "Musical Chairs" on CBS, making him the first African American TV game show host! 📺️

Instead of sitting in chairs like in the childhood game, contestants had to choose the correct missing lyrics to a song being performed live on stage in order to win a cash prize.

Daniel "Chappie" James Jr. (February 11, 1920 – February 25, 1978) was a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force who, in 1975, became the first African American to reach the rank of four-star general in the United States Armed Forces. Three years later, James was forced to retire prematurely due to heart issues, just weeks before dying of a heart attack.

James attended the famous Tuskegee Institute and instructed African American pilots during World War II. He flew combat missions during the Korean War and Vietnam War, and received the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, two Air Force Distinguished Service Medals, two Legions of Merit, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, a Meritorious Service Medal, and fourteen Air Medals.

As a partner in this mayoral debate hosted by the NAACP St. Petersburg Branch, The Woodson emphasizes the importance of being engaged in our local elections and ensuring your voice is heard by voting and staying informed about the changes ahead.

On this date in 1893, Hattie McDaniel was born! 🎂

Famously known as the first African American to win an Oscar for her performance in "Gone with the Wind" and the first African American woman to star in a national radio series, she is a trailblazer in the American entertainment industry.

Although she broke racial barriers within the industry, she continued to face discrimination. At the Oscars, she was required to sit at a segregated table, and throughout her career, she was often limited to roles that stereotyped African American women.

In addition to her acting career, she recorded blues music and performed on live radio.
