Mark your calendars! VCU professor and filmmaker Shawn Utsey will join Abigail DeVille, whose exhibition "A Mourning" is currently on display, for a conversation about why Central State Hospital is important.

The film focuses on the Central State Hospital in Petersburg, Virginia, which was established in 1870 (often cited as 1869) to treat formerly enslaved people, making it a pivotal site for studying the history of psychiatry and racial inequality.

DeVille's exhibition, "A Mourning," explores the death of her great-grandfather, Luther Wilson, who died at Central State Hospital in 1938.

This exhibition, curated by Jeremy Drummond, Associate Professor of Art, University of Richmond. features the work of nine contemporary filmmakers and two artist collectives who explore the various ways specific geographic locations influence—and cause us to negotiate—how we make meaning and understand (or contest) ideas of identity and power.

Politics of Place is organized by the University of Richmond Museums in collaboration with the Department of Art & Art History, University of Richmond, as part of the annual Tucker Boatwright Festival.

BLACK WORK: Absence/Absorption asks the question: what is black? Black is absorption, a gathering, all colors held at once, refusing to reflect. Black is the hug, the clasp, the cuddle with light itself. Black, in all its tonal ranges, moves across artists' canvases like music, like the shifting movements of a concerto.

The exhibition, curated by Dr. Kymberly S. Newberry, Visiting Assistant Professor of Art History.
