(5715)

There's lots to see and do at VMFA, from special exhibitions, collections that span the globe and the history of creative achievement, two restaurants, a not-to-be-missed shop, talks and programs that make the art come alive, and so much more! As of Oct 1, VMFA was certified as a Virginia Green attraction. It means we make recycling available, minimize the use of disposable food products and printed materials, reduce solid waste, use water efficiently, and conserve energy. But most importantly, it means we are always working harder to be better stewards of the environment. Don't forget to do your part!

"We want his works to stay in museums. We want to keep sharing them with the world." β€”Yaba Baker, fourth great grandson of artist David Drake (ca. 1800–ca. 1870)

This week, VMFA invited the descendants of artist David Drake to the museum for a ceremony to officialize the museum's restitution and repurchase of Drake's artwork "Double-handled Jug."

17 of Drake's descendants across generations gathered and watched as three of his eldest descendants signed an authorized certificate giving VMFA ethical ownership of the 1840 stoneware storage jug.

Having started talks surrounding the restitution this past February, VMFA is now one of five institutions nationwide that has reached an agreement with Drake’s descendants concerning the return or ethical ownership of Drake’s artwork in its collection.

VMFA's agreement follows a precedent set by Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, GA.; the Telfair Museums in Savannah, GA.; and the Milwaukee Art Museum.
