Today marks the first day of #HispanicHeritageMonth! We are honored to share this significant painting recently donated to the museum by the family of renowned San Bernardino artist, Ramón Contreras. This 1939 oil “Going to Church” is an incredible example of his work in the Mexican Muralist tradition.

Ramón, born in Mexico, came to San Bernardino with his parents when he was just a year old. By the time he reached the 11th grade at San Bernardino High School, Ramón had become recognized as a skilled painter. A 70 ft mural depicting scenes from daily life in the countryside of Mexico, still exists gracing the school’s theater building. Ramón went on to garner recognition for his work, receiving an award at the San Francisco Exhibition in 1937, and studying at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles.

Significant art works like this help the San Bernardino County Museum tell the unique and diverse stories of our region!

Art and the Cosmic Connection: Using the elements of art — shape, line, color, texture, value — students make sense of images of planets, asteroids, comets and moons, honing observation skills and inspiring questions. Learners of all ages create a beautiful piece of art while learning to recognize geologic and atmospheric features of solar system objects.

Are you fascinated with the Solar System 🪐? Then we have the project for you! One of the most persistent misconceptions for students (and even adults) is just how much space is in space! Our solar system is often depicted as a bunch of planets equidistant from one another, always in a straight line. However, as seen in this activity, the relative distance between planets doesn’t fit very well on a single page.

In this activity, students will predict the scale of our solar system and the distance between planets, then check their answers using fractions. Be sure to tag us here or on Instagram using @sanbernardinocountymuseum or @victorvalleymuseum to share your NASA of SBCM activities with us!

Happy #NationalWomensEqualityDay! Today, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ratification and adoption of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution 🇺🇸, which granted to women full and equal voting 🗳️ rights. The amendment was a direct result of the decades-long women’s suffrage movement and the battle for equal rights.

On August 26, 1920, the Secretary of State signed a proclamation giving women the right to vote 🗳️ and thus certifying the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Later that year, during the November elections, it is estimated that 8 million women across the nation exercised their right to vote.

In the 1970s, amidst strikes against gender discrimination and protests for women’s equality, a resolution was introduced to designate August 26th as National Women’s Equality Day.Today, we remember and thank all those who dedicated themselves to women’s equality and helped champion women’s rights.

Be sure to exercise your right and vote 🗳️ in the upcoming election!

The San Bernardino County Museum and Agua Mansa Pioneer Cemetery reopen on Tuesday, June 16, for regular hours Tues-Sun, 9am-5pm (Agua Mansa 10am-3pm Tues-Sat). Victor Valley Museum opens on Wednesday, June 24, Wed-Sun 10am-4pm.

We are happy to see our community back! We'll look a little different, and we're less "touchy" at this time, but we hope you find the museum comforting and a place of solace. In line with CDC, State, and County guidelines we have protective measures in place. We are requiring our visitors over two years old to wear a face mask, to social distance during your visit, and make sure to use hand sanitizer at stations throughout the museum. Until further notice, our Exploration Station live animal exhibit is closed, and our Caves & Lakes and Mastodon galleries are closed temporarily for guardrail upgrades. We look forward to seeing you soon!
