Although a Redlands Area Historical Society was organized in 1900, today’s Society was established in 1972 and incorporated in 1974. The Redlands Area Historical Society’s purpose is to support and to advance the many facets of the area’s historic resources. Historic resources, sites, and memorabilia provide tangible links to, and visible reminders of, the past, bringing continuity and perspective

to our lives. By perpetuating our past through the preservation of historic resources, we maintain a rich diversity in our community life. By respecting and restoring architectural integrity of structures and by conserving neighborhood environments, we preserve the unique character and document the historical evolution of the place in which we live. The Redlands Area Historical Society, Inc., emphasizes the conservation of the past in terms of buildings, neighborhoods, written and oral history, and memorabilia as well as programs to educate citizens, young and old, on the significance of the values of Redlands’ heritage.

In 1967 the Provident Federal Savings and Loan building in Redlands, California, designed by Mr. Marr, is one of six projects in Riverside-San Bernardino Counties to be honored for the ‘creative use of concrete” in an awards program co-sponsored by the Portland Cement Association and the San Bernardino-Riverside Counties Rock Products Association. The winning bank has eight tilt-up shaped concrete panels, separated by slot windows, forming the walls, and a folded concrete roof of thin-shell concrete. Structural engineers were Johnson & Nielsen, and the general contractor was Forsberg & Gregory. From architectural record, May 1967. #1967

On June 29, 1967, in the early morning hours, both the Methodist and Presbyterian churches burned. Both congregations and the city were in mourning, but out of the ashes came the rebuilding.

The Methodist building committee hired Leon Armantrout to design a building that would withstand another fire or a 7-point earthquake. It needed to be functional, so the community could also use the facilities. Acoustics were important, to amplify not only instrumental but also vocal music. The Inland Master Chorale have been among many who have performed regularly in the church. The signature round window on the west side of the building was designed by architect Paul Ulmer, a member of the church. It symbolizes the congregation looking outward to the community. The windowpanes form a cross. The structure was consecrated in 1971.

It is as much like a theater as it is a conventional worship space.

Interviewed by Monte L. Stuck for the Fortnightly Club in 2007, Armantrout said the client "indicated their needs to have an excellent acoustic space and mostly with the emphasis on musical acoustics and also a very flexible floor plan, which meant a level floor rather than a sloping floor sanctuary. And they wanted it fireproof. It’s actually a three-level structure. One is classrooms below in a basement with a sunken terrace below Cajon Street, and the main sanctuary level with gathering area and the chapel and then the balcony level where the German-built pipe organ and also the choir sits. ... It’s my most satisfying Redlands project.”
