Just received from a donor in Jersey City NJ this very early flatstrung Steinway 8' concert grand serial number 1396! Possibly only the 20th Steinway grand built. One of the earliest fancy cabinets (restoration of carved legs, lyre, music desk and arm ornamentation needed). An important acquisition given Bill Shull's Steinway studies.

Mid-1860s Braunschweig Steinweg ("Steinway and Sons" cast in plate), just donated to Period Piano Center. This piano is the product of C.F. Theodor Steinweg (Theodore Steinway) while still in Germany, who was later the pre-eminent designer of the modern Steinway piano.

Just back from the Piano Technicians Guild Convention in Denver, and the PTG Foundation celebration of the first English translation of an important early book on tuning. There were many musical offerings; I had a great time with Period Piano Center's 1866 Erard vertical, with which I celebrated my friend Fred Sturm's translation of Claude Montal's "The Art of Tuning." Catherine Lee and I performed three French parlor songs from the ca. 1830s, the time of Montal's first edition. I'll post two, "Le Docteur de mon Village" (M. Moring) and "Isaure" (Adolph Adam) . Later I was caught playing a couple of Chopin Preludes at the program sponsor PTG Foundation booth, so I'll include that too. I can't tell you how many fine pianists visited the Erard vertical and played everything from Chopin to Ravel. I shouldn't tell you that I came within seconds of unloading the Erard from the trailer back home when the great monsoonal deluge began....I was soaked, but the piano stayed dry....

This Price square, 5 1/2 octaves, ca. 1820, built in London, is available if Period Piano Center can raise some funds for its acquisition. We just learned about it yesterday; it's in entirely original condition and would provide an excellent contrast to the later squares in our collection. Others are interested but if we can raise a little money we're in a better position....Of course, Period Piano Center is a 501(c)3 organization. Contact me privately at [email protected]

Period Piano Center exhibited at WESTPAC PTG, arranged for the concert and provided the 1859 Chickering for a "period" experience. Frank French not only entertained us on both the Chickering and the 2009 Rubenstein 245, interspersed with fascinating musicological comments, but he climaxed the program with a humorous Gottschalk autobiographical narrative of an early San Francisco concert fiasco.

Period Piano Center is at WESTPAC PTG February 26-March 1 - The west coast regional Piano Technicians Guild technical conference. On February 27 we will provide the Chickering piano(s) for pianist Frank French, who will do an all-Gottschalk show. (see http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/i216_10697 ) Gottschalk was the first American-born concert pianist to make the big-time, and in his US tours he used Chickering concert grands. For an hour Frank French IS Louis Moreau Gottschalk! We will have our 1859 and our 1910 Chickerings on hand for his concert. Sign up for the conference at www.westpac-ptg.org

Period Piano Center is exhibiting at the PTG WESTPAC in Phoenix this weekend. We'll be promoting the Historical Piano Society Online Database of pianos.

The best foundation for the world's largest database of pianos is the ongoing participation and contribution of piano technicians - through membership, donations, and most importantly, uploading piano photos and data. www.periodpianos.org

Just returned from exhibiting for Period Piano Center at the Piano Technicians Guild Annual Convention in Bellevue, WA. Exhibited an early Steinway Square (the smallest built by the New York company), sold memberships to the Historical Piano Society (the new universal online piano database), and gained many supporters of our work. Picked up a donation in Arcata CA from Greg Granoff RPT, a Collard and Collard "Trichord" model 778, ca. 1875, in beautiful original condition.
