Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome

Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome We are dedicated to preserving, restoring and flying aircraft of the Pioneer, World War I and Golden Ages of Aviation. Old Rhinebeck is a 501c3 non-profit museum chartered by the State of New York. We fly air shows on weekends mid-June to late October.
Rhinebeck Aerodrome Museum and Airshows were established in 1993 as 501 (c) (3) non-profit organizations in order to continue Cole Palen’s legacy and ensure the long-term protection and survival of his collection. The Aerodrome’s mission is to obtain, restore, maintain and display Pioneer, World War I and Lindbergh era aircraft, vehicles, related equipment, documents, memorabilia and artifacts of historical significance while seeking to educate the public regarding the historical significance of its collection and the scientific and technological advancements that it represents.

The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is a true “living” museum of antique aviation located in the historic town of Rhinebeck, New York. We present one of the largest collections of early aeroplanes in the world, as well as automobiles, motorcycles, early engines and memorabilia spanning the period from 1900-1939. During our exciting weekend air shows, the Aerodrome turns back the hands of time and relives the early years of aviation (weather permitting). This colorful era is brought back to life amidst the roar of rotary engines and is great entertainment for all ages. The Saturday shows chronicle the history of flight with pioneer, World War I and Lindbergh era aircraft taking to the skies. If the winds are calm you will even see our 1909 Bleriot (the oldest flying aircraft in the United States) take to the air. The Sunday shows feature a World War I dogfight as well as barnstorming aircraft. In addition to weekend aerial demonstrations, the Aerodrome also offers four museum buildings housing static displays of aircraft from the pioneer, World War I and Lindbergh/barnstorming eras which are open to the public seven days a week from June to October.

Mission: The Aerodrome’s mission is to obtain, restore, maintain and display Pioneer, World War I and Lindbergh era aircraft, vehicles, related equipment, documents, memorabilia and artifacts of historical significance while seeking to educate the public regarding the historical significance of its collection and the scientific and technological advancements that it represents.

Hoping this becomes a reality...we can think of another location all the Triplanes might want to visit.

This is the BIGGEST event yet on our journey! We are organizing FOUR rotary powered Fokker Dr.Is to fly together October 2-3 at Dawn Patrol 2020! No one has seen and heard this in over 100 years! I am super excited about it!😁

We need help covering travel expenses though...We calculated it will take $10,000 dollars in travel expenses to get all four aircraft to and from the event.

PLEASE make a tax deductible donation to this historical cause! Any amount helps! and share this with anyone you know who loves aviation and WWI aviation history.

This will be special and we're letting you know about it very early–watch for the sign up announcement. Most 2020 season events will be posted by March.

So here it is! Save the Date. My buddy Marc Poole and I will be hosting the "Color of Flight" workshop at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Sept 18-20. The workshop will be sponsored by The American Society of Aviation Artists and Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. Ten spaces will be available for those who want to learn more about painting aircraft, people, and the landscape. Discounted rates will be given to active ASAA members. We'll make more details available in the coming weeks.

OLD RHINEBECK AERODROME RECEIVES PLANNING GRANT

RHINEBECK, NY – January 14, 2020 – The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome announces that it has received a $100,000 grant from the Disosway Foundation to fund a professional study for purposes of upgrading the Aerodrome’s museum, hangars, grounds and support spaces. The study, which starts immediately, will produce a Comprehensive Master Plan to position the Aerodrome for future development and help make it into a premiere tourist destination in the Hudson Valley for visitors from around the world. The Master Plan will be followed by a capital campaign to fund implementation.

Aerodrome President, Michael DiGiacomio says, “This generous donation comes at an important time. We have been working on a long-range plan to better house, display, and fly our collection. Now, a respected consultant will be guiding us to take our initiatives to the next level.”

The LA Group, based in Saratoga Springs, will provide the Aerodrome with a Master Plan to improve the visitor experience, museum infrastructure and daily operations. The plan will examine the topography of the site, improve logistics, accessibility, address sustainability, and determine capital and ongoing costs. The LA Group has worked on similar projects with many organizations, including Olana State Historic Site, West Point Military Academy, Arlington National Cemetery, New York State Olympic Development Authority, and Niagara Falls State Park.

The Rhinebeck Aerodrome Museum/Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is a 501 c 3 non-profit Museum, chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, dedicated to preserving, restoring and flying aircraft of the Pioneer, WWI, and Golden Ages of aviation. It's the Annual Appeal-Help a Dolphin Fly! Our focus this year is the Hispano-Suiza in our Sopwith Dolphin. The Dolphin is the only flying replica of that unique WWI fighter. The airframe is getting close and with the Hisso running, she’ll be back representing the British in the dogfight. We hope to raise $7,000 for the Hisso. Will you help so that she flies soon? https://oldrhinebeckaerodrome.wufoo.com/forms/zajggtm1qfu6ae/

Welcome Heather Howley, our newest Board Member. Heather has been all over the country pursuing her love of aviation. She settled in the Hudson Valley when she started Independent Helicopters at Stewart International Airport, with $25, building it into an area leader in the industry. She participated in the Aerodrome’s Girls with Wings, and fell in love with Old Rhinebeck. Her dedication to preserving and growing ORA received a boost when she held her wedding and, later, her husband’s memorial there. Heather is an ATP rated Helicopter pilot, Private Fixed wing pilot, Designated Pilot Examiner and thriving business owner contributing to the Hudson Valley in many ways.

Will the Air SHows open this summer or not (COVID) ?
Any body interested in buying ALL of my RC stuff? Planes, some done, some in kit form. Located in Savoy, MA. 01256
From my archives. Classic image of classic aircraft.
If you care about personal flight please comment on Remote ID before March 2. Remote ID, as proposed, kills model aviation without any valid reason. This threatens the future of all personal aviation. As a third generation flyer, it is a terrible shock that my beloved hobby and the sky I fly in could be taken away. Remote ID is, unnecessarily, a takeover of our low altitude and private airspace. The blow that is being delivered to the model aviation community could come next to manned recreational aviation. Our sky is a natural resource and a place to discover the joy of flight. Those of us who know what it means to fly must speak up today. If you love to fly, dream of flying, or wish to see future pilots and aircraft take to the sky, please comment on Remote ID today. Christopher Webb, EAA Life Member, AMA Life Member
The Dreaded Hun! Me
Cannon O'Skully in the FE-8. July, 1979. Sorry for the blurry image. It was my first time with a long lens.
It was restored there and moved to UH.
Way back machine to 1966 when my father, Walt Crocco and a young me were messing around in World War I and spent time with the mighty pigeon frasier pursuit, a cameo of Cole himself and other military trivia - cast now with proper German military music as originally shown.
In September of 2001, I visited the Aerodrome for the first time in years - having survived the South Tower - I was so glad to be back in the magic of the old aircraft flying and the ability to be alive for it all.
