Lost & Found: My Ancestor Was An Elmendorph Innkeeper!

My sister-in-law recently sent me an email with information about a long lost relative, Julia Elmendorf. This was an especially interesting and fun fact because I am currently the Innkeeper at the Elmendorph Inn and I wondered – “What are the chances that a distant relative was also an innkeeper at the Elmendorph Inn?” Could I be related to our beloved Cornelius Elmendorph, the first (second?) innkeeper? (or...the man the Friends of Elmendorph named the renovated inn after).

The Elmendorph Inn was saved in 1976 because people cared enough to act. Bicentennial-era advocates and students helped preserve this building for the community. Today, Historic Red Hook continues that work with the help of members, donors, volunteers, and neighbors who believe local history matters.

Rev250 Programming Grant — $15,000

Dutchess County awarded us funding to support the research, development, and implementation of an immersive tavern exhibit at the Elmendorph Inn, launching September 19. This work will help us bring the Inn’s history as a place of travel, labor, hospitality, and civic life to new audiences during the 250th anniversary commemorations.

We are deeply grateful for the recent support Historic Red Hook has received from local and regional funders. Like many small nonprofits, our work depends on a mix of memberships, individual donations, grants, sponsorships, and volunteer time. These awards help us care for our historic spaces, keep programs accessible, and continue building new ways for the community to connect with Red Hook’s history.

Welcome New Trustee: Courtney Zwart! Since 2011, I’ve been lucky enough to call the historic hamlet of Upper Red Hook home. My connection to Historic Red Hook (HRH) actually started back in 2005 when my partner walked through their doors to research our 1823 house. He didn't just find dates and names—he found a wonderful, welcoming group of people, and we’ve been members and fans ever since.

Historic Red Hook volunteer, Anna Goyette, researches a transcript from 1924, to compose the story about a relative of W.S. Teator. The young local was struck by lighting at age 12, and his diaries cover discussions about travels across the country in a covered wagon.
