Lantern Tours and Halloween Hunt Updates

As you all know, the Friday night 2021 Spirits of Rahway Lantern-Lit Tour of the Rahway Cemetery had to be re-scheduled to Sunday. All Friday 10/29 tours will take place on Sunday 10/31, with each tour going out one hour earlier on Sunday due to it being a weeknight. If you have not yet called us back to confirm your spot in the re-scheduled program, please do so as soon as possible. For those of you who pre-paid but confirmed that you cannot make the rescheduled tours, refunds will be processed within the next week.

As of this afternoon, we are still planning on going forward with Saturday night's events. The forecast says there is a possibility of rain showers but not of serious storms, so both the museum's own sold-out 2021 Spirits of Rahway Lantern-Lit Tour, and the Halloween Hunt with Brian J. Cano later in the evening (which have a few spots left), are still happening. Under the circumstances, however, please be sure to dress appropriately for a damp and atmospheric cemetery adventure!

Parking for both nights will be at Parkside Plaza, 1600 St. Georges Avenue. Google Maps: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Parkside+Plaza/@40.616023,-74.2857891,19z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x89c3b3948d947b09:0xed0789d0930e6bd0!8m2!3d40.6154825!4d-74.2859688

This year’s Ghosts of the Past Cemetery Tour program honoring first responders throughout Rahway’s history was a huge success! Almost 200 guests attended the event, with 17 groups travelling through the cemetery on a beautiful autumn day to hear the stories of local Ghosts including doctors, nurses, volunteers, police, first aid, and firefighters. And we owe so much of the success of this event to the dozens of volunteers who helped make it possible...https://www.merchantsanddrovers.org/2021/10/2021-ghosts-of-the-past-cemetery-tours-a-huge-success/

Thank you to all of the teams, spectators and volunteers who came out to Base Ball History Day and made it so special! And thank you to the Elizabeth Resolutes - 1870 Rules Base Ball for including us in this wonderful event - looking forward to another next year!

The Elizabeth Resolutes are extremely grateful for all of the teams and spectators that came out yesterday for our Base Ball History Day! It was a great time meeting old friends, making new ones, and everyone having fun playing vintage base ball on a spectacular summer day. Thank you to Liberty Base Ball Club of New Brunswick, Monmouth Furnace Base Ball Club, The Flemington Neshanock Base Ball Club, Atlantic Base Ball Club, Brandywine Base Ball Club, The Eclipse Base Ball Club of Elkton, New York Mutuals Base Ball Club, as well as Neil Hubert for coming out and playing with The Resolutes. Also want to thank Chuck Ciccarello and Jeff Kornhaas for making the trip down to play and pay respects to our late founder and Captain, Paul Salomone. We all know Paul was looking down on our home field yesterday with a smile on his face, as well as plenty of utterances of "Oh Marone!" whenever a play was muffed.

General information

The Merchants and Drovers Tavern Museum is one of New Jersey's surviving historical treasures. It has graced the corner of St. Georges & Westfield Avenues for over 220 years. It was originally built as a two-story house and general store in the 1700s. The structure was located on the main route between the Colonial towns of Elizabeth and Princeton and also connected New York City to Philadelphia. Noting the prime location, John Anderson, a tavern owner from Woodbridge, purchased the building and applied for a license to operate a Tavern and Inn in the late 1700s. He then extended the building eleven feet to the north and had rooms added to the second floor. In the 1820s, the building was enlarged further to become the four-story Federal Style structure that exists today. Aside from being a Tavern and Inn, the Merchants and Drovers served Rahway's citizens in every aspect of public and political life. It functioned as the original Town Hall as well as a meeting place for debates, elections, dances, and parties were all held at the Merchants & Drovers Tavern Museum The Merchants and Drovers changed owners and names throughout its history but functioned as a hotel until the 1930's when the owners ceased operation and rented it to the Girl Scouts of New Jersey. For the next 40 years the building would become the Girl Scout headquarters and be forever known as "The Old Girl Scout House." In the 1970's the building was threatened with demolition to make way for a chain restaurant. Local citizens from all over Rahway and Union County joined together to save the building and the history it represented. Today, the Merchants and Drovers is a museum dedicated to preserving local history.

The "Spirited" Fireside Chat last night was wonderful. The time just flew by. I attended in person and I think all of us who were there would have stayed all night if we could have. Thank you.
I had such an amazing time! Thank you, i will be doing it again.
Here are the pictures I took at the Spirits of Rahway Lantern Lit Tours. A fun time was had by all, special thanks to everybody who worked hard to make this such an enjoyable event.
A great time was had by all, at the annual Ghosts of the Past Cemetery Tour. Well done to all who helped make it happen. Here are pictures I took.
Had an awesome time yesterday afternoon at The History of the Paranormal Exhibit and the investigation last night. I am now more intrigued than ever about the history of the cemetery and those buried there. Thanks to Rick who was with us in the cemetery giving us history after midnight. I hope you'll be able to do the lantern tour this October.
Looking for info re St. Mark's RC Church now demolished. I was wondering if any bricks remained at the demo site? I have an ancestral attachment to that church and would like to have a brick or two to use in garden border at my home down the shore. Any help or direction much appreciated. Thanks so much. GB
I traveled to New Jersey back in 2014 for two book tours. I had the opportunity to place a wreath at Abraham Clark's grave in Rahway, NJ. He represented New Jersey and signed the Declaration of Independence. My first book is about his life. A great read for the 4th of July celebrations for the birth of our nation. A FOUNDER FOR ALL is available on Amazon, as well as at the Rahway Cemetery! My followup book, A PATRIOT'S PRICE, is also on Amazon. You will find a new appreciation for our founding fathers through these books. HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!!
