A favorite for young and old at the Virginia Czech and Slovak Folklife Festival is the bright red 1943 Seagrave Fire Engine - and it never fails to impress. Czech and Slovak families have a long and dedicated history with the Volunteer Fire Department – and that tradition continues today. Members of the county’s Volunteer Fire Department can be seen at the festival at the Pivo Tent (b**r), but they do a LOT behind the scenes every year to make the festival a success.

highlight of the Virginia Czech and Slovak Folklife Festival is the FOOD – and lots of it! Thanks to some very gracious organizations, we are able to make cabbage rolls, halušky, kolaches, and more in their kitchens. So a big shout out to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Elpis Greek Orthodox Church, and N. B. Clements Jr. High school and to all the culinary volunteers who bring their skills and knowledge of food traditions to all of us.

The Virginia Czech and Slovak Folklife Festival is all about community. The Heritage Center could not hold the festival every year without our stalwart community partners. The Hopewell Optimist Club grills the delicious kielbasa, the Prince George Mason Lodge No. 115 makes sure the pork is roasted just right, and volunteers from Bank of Southside Virginia makes sure all that tasty food is served to our visitors. When you see these folks at the festival, make sure to thank them for their service to the community and the festival!

Accordion Renaissance returns to the Virginia Czech and Slovak Folklife Festival. The group always has visitors on their feet, dancing to the tunes the group plays so well. Accordion Renaissance is dedicated to promoting the accordion through performance and education.

New at this year’s Virginia Czech and Slovak Folklife Festival is a display of bibles and religious texts from the collection of the Heritage Center. Some of these texts were brought by families immigrating to the county, and others date to the 1700s and the 1940s. Significant passages are translated for ease of understanding.

Today was BAKING DAY in preparation for the Virginia Czech and Slovak Folklife Festival! Hours were spent making Czech kolaches, ginger cookies and buckhorns (Slovakian kolaches), and sharing family stories and favorite “grandmother” cooking memories. Thanks to 15 tireless volunteers and the great staff of N.B. Clements Jr. High School for making hard work so much fun!
