In the setting sun on Sunday evening, folks said “Bye-Bye to Summer” to the classic bluegrass tunes of Berkley Band! Musicians Jim Cerully (mandolin), Rusty Lowe (guitar), Ralph Westfall (Dobro guitar), Spencer Atkinson (banjo), and Scott Highman (bass) played several hours to the delight of all who attended.

Special thanks to community partner Bank of Southside Virginia for their long-time support of the Heritage Center. The evening was made sweeter with all the treats they provided!

If you loved the Windmill at Flowerdew Hundred, the Heritage Center shop now has counted cross-stitch patterns of this historic Prince George County icon.

The original structure was built c. 1621 and is the first documented windmill erected in English North America. As a post mill, the body of the mill that houses the machinery and sails is mounted on a single vertical post, allowing the windmill to be rotated to face the wind. The post mill is one of the earliest forms of the vertical windmill and it derives from Roman water mill designs. The reconstructed mill was built in the 1970s. In 2010, the windmill was donated to the American Windmill Museum in Lubbock, Texas. But you can create a memory for your family with this pattern ($5.00).

The Museum Shop is open Tuesday-Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 804.863.0212 for information.
