Honoring the Life and Service of Brigadier General Sherian G. Cadoria, U.S. Army (Retired)

BG Cadoria passed away on July 8, 2026, at the age of 86.

A Vietnam Veteran and true trailblazer, she began her Army career in the Women’s Army Corps in 1961 and went on to serve more than 29 years. During her remarkable career, she broke barriers and became the first African American woman in the U.S. Army to achieve the rank of Brigadier General.

Her leadership, determination, and service helped open doors and pave the way for generations of Army women who followed.

We are proud to honor BG Cadoria’s remarkable life, service, and lasting legacy.

The museum staff was honored to welcome SSG Cheryl Dinges whose photo is featured in the gallery’s exhibit on gender integration of combat roles.

SSG Dinges thanked the team for their work on the exhibit which acknowledged that while some women’s groundbreaking service made national headlines, many served with quiet dedication moving the Army forward. In August 1942, Harriet West Waddy and Charity Adams made history as members of the first group of African American women commissioned as officers in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) at Fort Des Moines, Iowa.

Major Waddy served with distinction throughout World War II and later became assistant post inspector at the Kitzingen Basic Training Center in Germany. Lieutenant Colonel Adams went on to command the legendary 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion and became the highest-ranking African American woman in the Army by the end of the war.

Through their exceptional service and leadership, these women broke barriers and created new opportunities for generations of Army women who followed.

This recognition reflects the education team’s hard work in connecting learners with the history of Army women through engaging virtual learning programs presented from our Live Studio.
