Great news! We have received boxes of old school records from the North Polk Community Schools and country schools! It will be a while before they are available to the public BUT if you join the Big Creek Historical Society you can read them as you help catalog the records. Let the genealogists in your family know! Dates go back to the 1800’s. Message us on Facebook.

If you haven't visited the State Historical Museum in Des Moines lately, it's time to go. Look for their field tiling exhibit then come check out the pictures & equipment we have in the Polk City museum, attend the lecture on Thursday, Aug 15th and ask about the clay mined here. Picture is from the state museum interactive display on the 2nd floor: see an item, look it up on the screen. Money, Native Am. artifacts, lots more.

Did you hear the old school bell ring from the museum tonight? Our president heard it from her house... it’s surprising how far the sound carried. It’s also a reminder the bell was serious business before the tie of the century alerting the community to emergencies.

What is the name of the cemetery behind olofson shooting range? It's interesting there is a back portion. We never saw that on previous visits. There are several stones/markers overgrown by shrubs
Looking for information and photos of our building now Polk City Arts & Marketplace 113 West Broadway Street corner of 2nd & Broadway. Looks like from the abstract to have been these businesses in the past. There is a photo of it in the Big Creek Historical Society. Possible: Mathis & McBride General Store, Steadman Building, Phil Soucek Cafe, Lil's Bar & Tap, and an antique store. We have revived the building and would love to know all the history on it.... Thanks email [email protected]
The first superintendent of Alleman School, Claude Smith. Claude Smith is my paternal grandfather.
My great grandparents wedding certificate. I think Joseph Derickson was one of the signatures on the incorporation papers for Polk City? I also wonder if the witness Mr. Van Dorn is one of the family members that Van Dorn street is named after?
