Our speaker next Thursday, Kevin T Mason, Assistant History Prof at UNI has a chapter in his book, "Retracing the Dragoon Trail" about the tile works at Lehigh Brick and Tile Co and the drastic transformation of Iowa "from a marshy frontier into one of the most agriculturally progressive regions on earth".
Polk City had its own tile factory, part of the Hug Harmon legacy in the community. We were beyond excited when Moeckly Farms donated this labeled Polk City Tile field tile to the museum. Added to the original cart and photos from the tile factory, it makes an awesome display.
Mason's book is very much attuned to the physical changes to the landscape since the Lieutenant Albert Lea led the First Dragoons' exploration of the area in 1836.

Wow. Great programs.
