The Drayden African American Schoolhouse is one of the best preserved one-room schoolhouses in the area. Constructed in 1891 for St. Mary’s County African American population during the era of segregation, the schoolhouse operated into the early 1940s.

This Saturday, October 17 is the last open house in 2026. The schoolhouse will be open to visitors from 11-2.

William Goeshy served as lighthouse keeper at Piney Point, starting in 1931. In 1939, the U.S. Coast Guard took over lighthouse duties, and Goeshy transferred to the Coast Guard. In 1955, he died while a member of the Coast Guard at Piney Point. For 40 days after his death, his wife Beatrice became “keeper” until a replacement could arrive.

Calling all LEGO® enthusiasts! Get ready for a fun competition in honor of the oldest lighthouse on the Potomac River for the 2026 holiday season. The challenge entails creating a version of any lighthouse utilizing interlocking building bricks and bringing it to Piney Point Lighthouse Museum for display and competition judging.
