This 3-D printed model of the snorkel bell float from the “Black Panter” U-1105 submarine submerged off Piney Point may be seen in our Main Museum exhibits.
The snorkel allowed air to enter the submarine but kept water out. A small ball would break the waves and prevent them from entering the submarine. Diesel exhaust emitted from the bell pushed into the seawater so planes and other vessels would be unaware of the submarine’s presence, allowing it to stay submerged longer. The U-1105 was one of the first submarines to have this equipment.
