It is with a heavy heart that we pass along the sad news of the passing of Dr. Jerry “Dusty” Alan Sayers on Sunday, August 29th. He leaves behind his wife, Robin, and two sons Landon and Bo.

Dusty was an important and irreplaceable part of the community and our Rocky Mount Family. His fulfilling journey began here at Rocky Mount with an apprenticeship during his senior year of high school in 1996. It then continued with his hiring in 1999, and culminated in being a loyal member of our Board of Trustees. His love of both history and Rocky Mount spilled over into his many years of volunteering both here and Sycamore Shoals.

His impact was widespread, touching the lives of his many students through his 16 year teaching career, in both World and American Histories at Science Hill High School. He also spent time lecturing through his YouTube Channel “United States History Through Film.”

Dusty’s love for history and education was shared through his years of passionate dedication to Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park, in his portrayal of the Reverend Samuel Doak for over 25 years.

Although too soon gone, his legacy of dedication and passion will not be forgotten.

For Rocky Mount, he will be forever remembered for his prophetic readings of Our Nation’s Declaration of Independence during our annual 4th of July Celebrations.

The Rocky Mount AmeriCorps position is now live!
We NEVER stop for the historic markers along the road but something made us stop for Rocky Mount and are we ever glad we did! We ended up taking the 2-hour tour on May 22, 2021 and as seniors, we paid $9 each - the best $18 we've ever spent and we've done a ton of historic tours in our respective 83 and 70 years!! An excellent (and just-the-right-length) introductory video gave us enough history to understand what we'd see. The small but impressive museum gave us context and is FULL of incredible artifacts for such a small place - and we arrived early enough to see it before the tour. And the volunteers who take the parts are impressive actors and actresses - Broadway has nothing on them - and I've been there! And they know when and where to step out of character to answer important questions. The interactions among them are at times hilarious and always natural and unbelievably informative (and I thought I knew my history - I learned a LOT in two incredibly entertaining hours). It went too fast. I was ready for more. Thank you ALL for the best day ever in many a year of traveling and visiting a lot of places. You made it come alive in a VERY entertaining way! Kudos to each of you!!!
Someone told me that Mr. Alvin Gerhardt (?) was still managing Rocky Mount. I hope that's true. I worked on site planning for that historic area back in the late 1970s when Mr. Gerhardt was the manager - great guy!
We went with our son and daughter in law to the Candle Light Christmas!! It was amazing!! I would give it 10 stars, the actors telling the stories were amazing and they kept your attention with their skills of story telling.. This will be definitely a Christmas Tradition for my family!!❤❤❤❤❤
Rocky Mount Christmas.
We Loved some History on Blacksmithing @ Rocky Mount State Park! Pewter Casting musket ball🙂
Did anyone take pictures last night? That was so delightful and inspiring!!!!
I remember back in the late 70s I had the fortune to visit this place. I was 11. AWESOME memories.
Rocky Mount was a fantastic leap back in time to the East Tennessee frontier of 1770-1820. The museum is world-class, the Cobb House is beautifully restored and full of carved heart-pine moldings and period furnishings including numerous original Cobb and Massengill family pieces. Best of all were the two docents on the two-hour East Tennessee Heritage Tour whose knowledge, erudition and enthusiasm were astonishing. If there was a drawback, it‘s that there was too much to take in on one visit, and I will definitely cure that with a return on my next trip to East Tennessee. Don’t miss this incredible spot!
Enjoyed an excellent tour today at Rocky Mount. The tour guides were wonderful and so knowledgeable. It was a great history lesson!
The very nice and polite grounds keeper allowed us to take photos on the property. He asked that we share some photos once they were finished. Thank you for the opportunity Rocky Mount State Historic Site
