Rocky Mount State Historic Site celebrates Starlet Williams, who served with distinction for 27 years. Starlet was a cherished member of the Rocky Mount staff and remains well-known for her portrayal of Ruth, the Cobb family’s cook. She is fondly remembered for her smile, easy laugh and quick wit. She also served as a high school teacher at University High in Johnson City and holds a master’s degree in history. The Rocky Mount Historical Association Board of Trustees recently recognized Starlet for her excellence as an interpreter. We wish her the best in her future endeavors and thank her for helping us keep history alive.

Happy President's Day!

On June 8, 1790, our first President George Washington appointed William Blount as the governor of the newly organized Southwest Territory. In October of that year, Blount set up a temporary capital at William Cobb's house here at Rocky Mount and began administering the territory.

Don't forget, we will be opening for the season in just over two weeks on March 5. Make plans to bring the family out and #RediscoverRockyMount!

02/16/2019

As part of Black History Month, we wish to honor and remember the service of the wonderful Ms. Mary Alexander.
Ms. Mary Henderson-Alexander (March 23, 1946--Jan. 16, 2019) served The Rocky Mount Historical Association & State Historic Site and her community well during her lifetime. As a member of the Rocky Mount Board of Trustees, she helped to create programs that educated and entertained the community during the first five years of the second decade in the 21st Century. Her service on the Board of Trustees will always be remembered. Moreover, Ms. Alexander’s community service affected every aspect of society, including education, religion, politics, economic and social reforms, and human equality.
With the earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in history and Black American Studies from East Tennessee State University, Ms. Alexander ‘s achievements were outstanding. Among her noted accomplishments was her election to the Washington County Commission. She represented the 4th District, from 2002 to 2006. She was the first black citizen to get elected to serve on the Commission.
Moreover, among her accomplishments was her leadership of the Langston Heritage Group in Washington County to improve the County’s educational system. Connected to her service to improve education was her leadership role in the preparation of an annual celebration of Martin Luther King’s lifetime work for human equality. Under Ms. Alexander’s leadership, the annual event was always well attended and outstanding performers and speakers participated.
Another example of Ms. Alexander’s leadership role to give proper recognition to outstanding citizens was the renaming of a Johnson City Medical Center to honor Dr. Hezekiah B. Hankal, who was an outstanding minister, physician, educator, and community leader.
The achievements and services of Ms. Alexander are too numerous to list all of them; but it can be said that her contributions to society have helped to improve local communities, the state, and the nation. The Rocky Mount Historical Association is honored and blessed to have had Ms. Alexander’s service on its Board of Trustees. We thank her and extend our regret for her loss to her family.
