Before you say “Happy Memorial Day,” take a moment to remember what this day truly means.
For many of us, Memorial Day means cookouts, family gatherings, a long weekend, time off work, laughter, and making memories with the people we love. But at its heart, Memorial Day is something much deeper.
It is a day of remembrance.
A day to honor the men and women of our military who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted, freedom to gather, freedom to speak, freedom to live the lives we choose in this beautiful country we call home.
And while we remember those who laid down everything, we should also remember the families they left behind, the spouses, the children, the parents, the loved ones who carry that sacrifice every single day. Organizations like the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) remind us that remembrance is not just about the fallen, but about those still living with that loss.
This weekend, maybe take a different kind of walk. Visit a cemetery. Stop at a headstone. Read a name. Whisper thank you.
Because every flag planted in the ground represents a story, a family, a sacrifice.
The haunting notes of Taps were never meant to be background music. They are a final goodbye. A promise that the fallen will not be forgotten.
So yes, enjoy your family. Fire up the grill. Laugh. Make memories. That freedom was paid for by someone who never made it home.
But before the celebration, pause, Reflect, Remember.
This Memorial Day, honor the fallen, remember their families, and never forget the true cost of freedom. 🇺🇸
