uCity Square has welcomed some new neighbors to the community: bees! 🐝

Through a new partnership with ⁠Alvéole, uCity Square is supporting urban biodiversity while creating opportunities for our community to get a closer look at the important role bees and other pollinators play in our environment.

A friendly honey bee hive has been installed on the rooftop of 3401 Market Street, where Alvéole’s beekeeping team (and lead beekeeper, Tanner) will care for the colony throughout the season. At One uCity Square, BeeHomes have also been installed in the pollinator gardens to provide nesting habitat for local wild bee species, including solitary bees such as mason and leafcutter bees. Take a peek the next time you pass by along Cuthbert Street between 37th and 38th!

To kick things off, join us on October 8 at 12:00 PM for Explore the World of Wild Bees, a free Lunch & Learn with Alvéole that takes a closer look at wild pollinators, their role in our food system and how we can help support them in urban environments. Register at link in bio. 🐝

Collaboration is the foundation for the Artist + Researcher Exhibition (ARx) program in uCity Square. ARx brings together the creative power of artists and the intellectual rigor of researchers to translate complex scientific concepts into accessible, engaging concepts through art. The dynamic process in which ARx participants engage creates a unique opportunity for cross-disciplinary collaboration, where scientists inspire the reason and process behind creating art, while artists amplify understanding as well as the impact of potential outcomes within research.

​Nine researchers and nine artists were paired to create a piece of art based on science over the course of a 10-month collaboration. Pairs entered the experience with an open mind and willingness to work in a true collaboration, and a willingness to let go of what they thought would happen and push themselves towards a transformative way of listening, thinking, creating and talking about science and art.

​The program asked selected participants to work together to create their piece in any medium desired. Each team’s piece will be displayed at One uCity Square as a collection. Teams will present about their experience, the process, and the meaning behind their piece during the Exhibition Opening on Thursday, September 24. This month's Life Science Luncheon welcomes Gregory Dean, MD to share the journey of his company, DriQ Health.

​DriQ Health is a Philadelphia company that monitors continence and mobility in senior living. DriQ's battery-free sensor attaches to any adult brief and tells staff when a resident is wet; a companion wristband signals when that resident gets up. Dr. Dean has spent three decades operating on children with neurogenic bladder and incontinence. DriQ grew out of that work. He is Chief of Pediatric Urology at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at Temple University. ​Trained at Columbia University and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, he is past chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Urology and a past president of the American Association of Pediatric Urology.

The drug companies Merck and Moderna, Inc. have announced a successful late-stage trial for a personalized mRNA vaccine designed to help prevent the return and spread of melanoma, opening a new avenue of treatment that doctors hope will work against many types of tumors.

"We should be hearing results from multiple studies over the next few years, and there's every reason to hope now, with this news, that many of them will be positive," said Robert Vonderheide, MD, DPhil, director of the Abramson Cancer Center and president-elect of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

Last week, we had the pleasure of having Kyle Bryant as our featured Life Sciences Luncheon speaker. Kyle is a leader within the Friedrich’ Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) and founder/director of rideATAXIA. He was diagnosed at 17 with Friedreich’s ataxia, a rare, life-shortening, degenerative neuromuscular disorder. Kyle shared his experience living with FA, and insights on research and treatments including key advancements at CHOP. We were very inspired and learned so much from Kyle!
