Fairmount Water Works

Fairmount Water Works Discover. Connect. Act. For more than 200 years, the Fairmount Water Works has continually found ways of telling the story of our connection with water.

Historic site of pumping station, aquarium, Kelly Pool, & today houses an award-winning Interpretive Center focusing on environmental education and stewardship. The Fairmount Water Works operated as a pumping station from 1815 to 1909, an aquarium from 1911 to 1962, as the Kelly Natatorium (pool) until 1972, and today houses an award-winning urban environmental education center, and Philadelphia Water's public education destination.

World Water Day helps to raise awareness about the critical importance of freshwater resources and advocates for sustainable water management practices. The theme of World Water Day 2025 is ‘Glacier Preservation’. Glaciers are critical to life – their meltwater is essential for drinking water, agriculture, industry, clean energy production and healthy ecosystems. Rapidly melting glaciers are causing uncertainty to water flows, with profound impacts on people and the planet.

Help us celebrate World Water Day 2025 by registering for the Walk for Water for Life- a 5 K walk/run starting at Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center. Stay to learn about an important organism living in our waterways - the diatom! Diatoms are a type of algae that have cell walls made of silica. They play a key role in oxygen production, the food web and in determining water quality. Under magnification, their geometric patters are fascinating! Come learn more and make a diatom print!

Because of the extreme cold this month, there is a lot of ice on the Schuylkill River! The Schuylkill River freezing is rare today, but it happened more often in the past. For example, in January 1780, during a very cold winter of the Revolutionary War, the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers froze solid, letting people and goods cross over the ice.

Come on down to the Water Works to listen to the ice creaking and groaning!
And remember, do not walk on the ice, even if it looks thick in areas - it is not safe!

International Environmental Education Day has been celebrated on January 26th since 1975. Its goal is to identify environmental issues, both globally and locally, and to raise awareness about the need to conserve and protect the environment. Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center strives to educate individuals about the importance of water in our lives: past, present and future, and the need to protect and care for our waterways. Come visit our Center in the lower level of the Historic Landmark, Fairmount Water Works. Or visit our website to find out about our offerings, events and programs! fairmountwaterworks.org
