Have you ever seen a ✨shiny✨ fossil? Now you have!
Ammonites were mollusks that first appeared during the Devonian (Paleozoic), and vanished during the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction (409-66Ma). The inner surfaces of ammonite's shells have layers of nacre, or mother-of-pearl, an iridescent organic-inorganic composite secreted by the mollusk. During the fossilization process, those layers can transform into ammolite, considered to be an opal-like gemstone.

Did you know that Trilobites are a fossil group of arthropods? They are related to crustaceans and insects! This group first evolved during the Cambrian, about 520 million years ago, and they went extinct about 250 million years ago.
These trilobites are from Atlas Mountain, Morocco, and the locality is from the Ordovician period (~450 million years old).

What is a type specimen? 🧐
A type specimen is a primary specimen (or sometimes a series of specimens) that serves as the scientific name-bearing representative for its species.
The first type specimens recorded in our Invertebrate Paleontology collection date from September 12th, 1893, when L. I. Woolman donated the types of Cerithium pilsbryi. Almost 130 years later, the Invertebrate Paleontology collection maintains ~5,000 types from over 100 authors.

Great event tonight in Camden!
The Cooper River, a 16-mile tributary of the Delaware River in southwestern New Jersey, was once heavily polluted and nearly half sewage. Today, thanks to the Clean Water Act and many efforts from local organizations, this river is a thriving waterway perfect for local recreation — fishing, birdwatching, rowing, kayaking and canoeing — hidden in plain sight. Don Baugh, president and founder of Upstream Alliance recently lead an expedition through the entire length of the Cooper River with a film crew, a National Geographic photographer, several local students and even Academy scientists from our Fisheries Section.
Join us at the Camden County Boathouse on Oct 17th for a film premiere of the “Search for the Cooper: A River Hidden in Plain View.” The film features 4 youth on a 6-day expedition trekking up the Cooper River to find its source. The film is free but seats are limited. RSVP here: https://forms.gle/YHGwqe2a1X6ianCG8
Thanks to New Jersey American Water American Water for the support on this expedition and film!
