Believe it or not, Summer is right around the corner, which means Summer Glass Camp!

In this week-long, half-day intensive, your child will experience the magical world of hot and cold glass through our curriculum designed for our youngest enthusiasts! They’ll be able to experience aspects of glass ranging from interacting with molten glass to castings and fusings to applications of cold glass. We’ll also dive into a little glass history and science! Throughout these varying ways of making and learning, we’ll have a strong focus on making their ideas come to life!

Session 1 runs from July 8-12, 8am-noon
Session 2 runs from August 5-9, 8am-noon

This camp is intended for 10-14 year olds.

Today’s the day!!! Our “You Design, We Create” competition is open now until 5/3 at 7PM. You get to sketch up an idea of something you would like to see us make out of glass. Our lovely glass artists will then choose a winner, and the winning design will be created as a live demo during our 5/3 First Friday event! The winner will also get to keep the piece! So cool, right?!?

Well in order to be considered for the competition, 1) like this post, 2) tag 2 friends and 3) comment

Once you do that, slide into our DMs with your beautiful/original/creative design! You also have the option of turning in your design from 6-7PM (the first hour of our First Friday event) on 5/3 in person.

Let the magic commence!

Artist Spotlight: Gemma Hollister is a community member of East Falls Glassworks who got her start in glass at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture. After taking just one glass class she knew she was hooked. Philadelphia has a strong presence in the glass community, and like others before her on Blown Away, she was able to “represent this city and its glass legacy on the show”. Philly “is an underrated place filled with a lot of promising talent and great energy in the glass world”.

Gemma is adding her own glass footprint in the Philadelphia community with her studio and production company formed with her partner, fellow glass artist Tate Newfield. Their collaborative company was born from their love of Italian glass. Its name is derived from Tate’s mother’s last name, and family company Antolini Stone in Santa Cruz, California. Gemma and Tate repurposed this family name to create something that “could exist outside of [their] own artistic identities”. Gemma and Tate have been creating new and exciting work based on her time on Blown Away.

While they have their own studio founded in 2022, Gemma and Tate still frequent East Falls Glassworks where they can work on a larger scale and connect with the “Philadelphia glass community in a way we can’t do in our own studio”.

We are looking forward to cheering on Gemma in her journey on Blown Away and beyond! East Falls Glassworks will be having a screening of Blown Away on 3/14 at 7pm!

Picture this: you are eating lunch with your friend. They are talking about the greatest day of their life, and while doing so, happen to mention the word “wobblet”. This word is new to you. Unfamiliar. Your friend continues to talk, but you’ve stopped listening, stuck on this word. Your window of opportunity has closed to ask your friend “what, who, when, where, why is a wobblet?” You slyly take out your phone and begin to type in the letters spelling out this unusual word. You hit search, clicking the first link that pops up. You find yourself perusing the East Falls Glassworks website. You are intrigued, enamored, and then you see it. All your questions have been answered. There, in front of you “Wobblets! An Easy-Going Introduction to Goblet-Making Monday 4/29/24 thru Thursday 5/2/24, 6-10PM”. You being to sob joyfully knowing you have found your true calling. Your friend looks at you and wonders at what point you stopped listening to them. You sign up for the class knowing this is going to be the greatest four nights of your life.

P.S. This class is intended for glassblowers who have a solid foundation in the hot shop, but encourages students of all skill levels to join who have an interest in creating stemware.

Start your summer with Hot Sculpting + Assembly with James Labold! In this 6 session workshop, students will learn the foundations of using hot glass as a sculptural medium, using bit work and hot sculpting to explore the expressive possibilities of glass. Did you know that the beautiful line work you see in glass is often achieved by a technique known as cane? These colorful glass rods are pulled out while hot, chopped into shorter pieces while cold, then heated back up to be shaped and blown to form a vessel. Artwork and footage are from Dan Cutrone’s class CANE: Basics and Beyond. Fire polishing a commission piece. This rondel is in one of the annealing ovens. In the oven, it is brought up to temperature so @nikchristensen can use a hot torch on it without thermal shocking it and destroying the piece. This is one way of smoothing out/removing marks left from cold working a piece.
