Artist Spotlight: Gemma Hollister is a community member of East Falls Glassworks who got her start in glass at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture. After taking just one glass class she knew she was hooked. Philadelphia has a strong presence in the glass community, and like others before her on Blown Away, she was able to “represent this city and its glass legacy on the show”. Philly “is an underrated place filled with a lot of promising talent and great energy in the glass world”.

Gemma is adding her own glass footprint in the Philadelphia community with her studio and production company formed with her partner, fellow glass artist Tate Newfield. Their collaborative company was born from their love of Italian glass. Its name is derived from Tate’s mother’s last name, and family company Antolini Stone in Santa Cruz, California. Gemma and Tate repurposed this family name to create something that “could exist outside of [their] own artistic identities”. Gemma and Tate have been creating new and exciting work based on her time on Blown Away.

While they have their own studio founded in 2022, Gemma and Tate still frequent East Falls Glassworks where they can work on a larger scale and connect with the “Philadelphia glass community in a way we can’t do in our own studio”.

We are looking forward to cheering on Gemma in her journey on Blown Away and beyond! East Falls Glassworks will be having a screening of Blown Away on 3/14 at 7pm!

Picture this: you are eating lunch with your friend. They are talking about the greatest day of their life, and while doing so, happen to mention the word “wobblet”. This word is new to you. Unfamiliar. Your friend continues to talk, but you’ve stopped listening, stuck on this word. Your window of opportunity has closed to ask your friend “what, who, when, where, why is a wobblet?” You slyly take out your phone and begin to type in the letters spelling out this unusual word. You hit search, clicking the first link that pops up. You find yourself perusing the East Falls Glassworks website. You are intrigued, enamored, and then you see it. All your questions have been answered. There, in front of you “Wobblets! An Easy-Going Introduction to Goblet-Making Monday 4/29/24 thru Thursday 5/2/24, 6-10PM”. You being to sob joyfully knowing you have found your true calling. Your friend looks at you and wonders at what point you stopped listening to them. You sign up for the class knowing this is going to be the greatest four nights of your life.

P.S. This class is intended for glassblowers who have a solid foundation in the hot shop, but encourages students of all skill levels to join who have an interest in creating stemware.

If you are uncertain if this class is right for you, please reach out! Email [email protected] or send us a DM.

You can sign up for this class online at EastFallsGlass.com under Multi-Week Classes + Intensives

Our staff spotlight of April is Eric Hernandez! He is a maker/designer/fabricator living and working in the Philadelphia Area. With 15 years of glass experience, he teaches everything from workshops to our intensive classes here at EFG. He just finished up teaching our Color Bootcamp last week!
Eric has worked for East Falls Glassworks for 8 years and has helped us grow our community by being a mentor and friend to many of our students and renters.
Click the first panel to follow him on IG and scroll through to see his mad skillz. We are so lucky to have Eric helping us out!

In January, we shut down for 3 weeks to do repairs on our furnace. Here are some photos of this process.
Did you know that, when hot, glass is corrosive? We have a crucible- style furnace, which basically means there is a giant ceramic bowl that holds all of our molten glass for us! Over time, that bowl can be corroded by the glass that it holds so, we have to replace it every few years!
In these photos, you'll see us make sure the furnace is empty, peel away the fibrous heat material (toxic when breathed in), remove the top of the furnace (also known as the crown), and lift the old crucible from the furnace.
We then chipped out any old glass left behind, fixed any flaws, leveled everything out and placed a new crucible in!
It's a multi-day process and requires a lot of hands to help out. We couldn't have asked for a better team during our maintenance period!

How do our workshops function? Take a side scroll and let us tell you then take a look at our website to sign up for one!
Reserve a spot in one of our workshops and be part of a larger group that receives a demonstration and the assistance needed to complete the object assigned to that workshop! Kids are welcome!
Usually, the classes cap out at 18 people and they run about 3 hours! After the demonstration, the group is split up between 3 benches and the instructor at that bench guides each person through it, one at a time, with a little help from one of the other group members. Glass blowing is a team sport!
Once the object is complete, you are free to leave or stick around and watch/help the other members! Your object is usually ready for pick up in about a week!

Today…we are gathered to worship our furnace. 😇
We are very lucky to have an electric furnace. Which just means that squiggly electric elements along the walls of the furnace do all of the heating for us in place of a gas flame. Most glass furnaces are running 24/7 because glass expands and contracts with heat. It stays at about 2000 degrees!
This furnace is a crucible-style furnace which means there is a large ceramic bowl that holds 500 lbs of glass!
If we were to turn the furnace off, the glass would contract as it cooled and damage the bowl. This is why the furnace must stay in at all times.
We have yet to name our furnace yet. What do you think it’s name should be? Drop it in the comments below!
