Gravers Lane Gallery is proud to announce a special two week exhibition in collaboration with The Stained Glass Project: Windows That Open Doors ✨
The windows will be on view June 1 - June 14, with an Opening Reception on Friday, June 7, 5-8pm ✨

The Stained Glass Project (SGP) is a volunteer run after-school arts program that introduces under-served Philadelphia public high school students to the technically demanding artistic discipline of making stained glass. Each year students come every week and create magnificent stained glass windows for worthy institutions. After working so hard on them, they then donate their windows to deserving students all over the world. They receive social service credits from their schools for attending this program.
This year’s windows were made by students from The Crefeld School and Science Leadership Academy.

After co-founding and running the program for the past 20 years, Paula Mandel and Joan Myerson Shrager are stepping down from their roles. They are passing the torch to Sammie Gualtieri and Kate Crankshaw (GLG’s own Associate Artistic Director), who will be stepping into the roles as co-directors. As a way to honor the impact that Paula and Joan have had over the past 20 years, we are raising money in their honor to establish a scholarship fund. This fund will allow students to continue their glass education at craft schools nationwide.

More information on SGP & the exhibition, as well as the link to donate to the Legacy Scholarship Fund, can we found through the link in our bio 🔗

Gravers Lane Gallery is thrilled to announce “Mythos”, a solo exhibition by fiber artist Sasha Baskin 🌹
The exhibition will open with a reception and artist talk on Friday, May 24th 5-8pm at Gravers Lane Gallery in Chestnut Hill, and will close July 15, 2024 🥀

Drawing from Baudrillard’s concept of “hyperreality” and simulation and simulacrum, this series of work examines blurring of the distinction between real and unreal, reality and reality television. Each work becomes a new screen, a new layer of meaning through which a scene from reality television is conveyed. Every new episode of a dating show becomes a new mythological rendering, a new hero’s journey to follow, to worship, to retell and recount. With each podcast, the recap, the meme, and repost, the echoes of these narratives become new mythologies that become the mainstays of our era.

A final rose recipient on “The Bachelor” can become a modern Helen of Troy when she tries to flee the show and break the structure of the past 23 seasons. When she is trapped in her hotel room and forced to resume the season, she becomes (as was Helen) a prisoner of forces she cannot see or control. She is both powerless in the moment while extraordinarily powerful: Helen of Troy started the Trojan War; Cassie from Season 23 of “The Bachelor” changed the nature of the franchise and redefined the structure of reality television.

Reality television exists to remind us to feel comfortable in our own reality. If falling in love on tv is fake, my love is real. Hyperreality exists to make us feel comfortable in our own existence. This work seeks to question that comfort and how we engage with the reality television narratives which surround us. Through bobbin lace and woven images the pieces capture the immediacy of pop culture with the slow analog process of thread. The images themselves unravel. Slow down. Examine the simulation frame by frame.

Gravers Lane Gallery is pleased to announce Seth Michael Carlson’s first solo exhibition of jewelry at GLG, “MASS MIGRATIONS” 🐝
The exhibit will open with a reception and artist talk on Friday, May 24th 5-8pm at Gravers Lane Gallery, in Chestnut Hill and will close July 15th 2024 🪲

The jewelry industry has dark corners. A minimal research online easily uncovers troubling facts with issues such as human rights violations, political conflicts, and detrimental environmental impact –to name but a few. Jewelry is associated with opulence, celebration, luxury, glitz and romance. Minimal thought is usually given to the impact the industry has on the environment, animals and human beings. Thank goodness that the rise of modern era eco-consciousness in almost every industry has resulted in a growing number of conscious consumers who are raising the jewelry industry standards. Carlson is a jeweler who is not only an outstanding craftsman, but is building his art practice with integrity. He is making jewelry ethically and sustainably which means the materials the jewelry is made from ensures fair wages, safe working conditions, and minimizing environmental degradation. He is concerned about animal welfare and environmental stewardship.

MASS MIGRATIONS is an art jewelry exhibit that strives to capture the character of the fauna and flora that Seth encounters in the natural world –a celebration of its beauty. It is important to him that each piece is handcrafted using ethically sourced gold, silver, and gemstones. He sees every piece as a celebration of the natural world and believes that the materials he chooses should reflect the value of life that he seeks to convey. Seth believes in capturing the character of each life form through subtle expressive gestures. With a focus on environmental preservation, each piece is a snapshot in time to bring awareness and appreciation to the lesser known species.

Gravers Lane Gallery is thrilled to announce our next show, Continuum, on view beginning today until May 15!

Continuum highlights the work of two Philadelphia area female artists, painter Jan Morgen and fiber artist Pamela E. Becker. GLG brings them into dialogue about the dedication they apply to their artistic practices, spanning decades. Both artists explore materials with a keen awareness of detail; one layering pigment with mark making and the other coiling embroidery thread into large scale vessels. Their time consuming processes invite healing and contemplative states of being: stitch by stitch; row by row; layer, mark, scrape, paint, repeat. Patterns, symbols and color play off each other in this serene pairing of painting and basketry.

We are proud to present this exhibition as part of
(re)FOCUS celebrates the 50th anniversary of Philadelphia Focuses on Women in the Visual Arts/1974, a citywide festival recognizing women artists. With over 150 exhibitions, panels, lectures, workshops, and demonstrations it was one of the first large-scale surveys of the work of contemporary American women artists, signaling the inception of the American Feminist Art Movement. (re)FOCUS 2024 is also a Philadelphia citywide festival showing how women-identified and BIPOC artists have moved from the periphery to the center of the art world. Like its 1974 predecessor, (re)FOCUS is a collaboration among Philadelphia’s large, small, and diverse visual arts institutions.

Thomas Spake uses opaque and translucent glass to explore texture and pattern. He is inspired by the subtle yet mysterious beauty of our natural world, and his simple forms and shapes are intended to act as a canvas for the glasscapes to inhabit. Spake uses unconventional techniques along with the inherent chemistry of the metal oxides in the colored glass to create complex patterns that imitate natural objects or landscapes. After blowing the glass, he engraves the surface to reveal the interior colors, then sandblasts the piece to create a matte finish.
