Even decades ago, members of the local Polish-American community gathered just like they do today—laying a beautiful memorial wreath to honor the "Father of the American Cavalry." Paterson History | 1965 🇺🇸

Congressman Charles S. Joelson, a Paterson native, served New Jersey in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1961 to 1969. Before entering Congress, he served as Paterson’s city counsel and worked in New Jersey law enforcement. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

In this historic photograph, Joelson is pictured with members of Bernard Armitage American Legion Post 360, presenting a framed photograph of the USS Juneau. It was a U.S. Navy light cruiser built in Kearny, New Jersey. It was sunk on November 13, 1942, during World War II, with the loss of most of its crew, including the five Sullivan brothers.

The post honors Bernard F. Armitage, a U.S. Navy serviceman who lost his life aboard the USS *Juneau* during World War II in November 1942.

A meaningful moment connecting Paterson’s history, military service, and the community’s dedication to remembering its veterans.

💖A beautiful piece of history from the Paterson News archives: Mrs. Wanda Arndt of Ellison Street in Paterson embracing her sister, Miss Martha Berndt, after 27 years of separation. 🛫Martha traveled all the way from Hamburg, Germany, making their 1965 reunion an unforgettable milestone of family devotion that overcame both distance and time.

🤔Did you know this beautiful piece was designed by Gaetano Federici (1880–1964)? He was a legendary Italian immigrant who became Paterson, New Jersey's most renowned civic sculptor. Originally dedicated on Columbus Day in 1953, this artwork has stood for decades as a proud symbol of Italian-American heritage and craftsmanship in the community.

On this day…

October 9, 1948 - On this date, Larry Doby hit a home run in Game Four of the 1948 World Series to become the first African American ballplayer to hit a home run in World Series history.

In the third inning, at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, Doby connected on Johnny Sain's offering to give the Cleveland Indians a 2-1 lead, and eventual victory over the Boston Braves. Cleveland would go on to win the World Series, the last World Series victory for Cleveland.

After the game Doby and Indians starting picture, Steve Gromek, celebrated with a big hug and all smiles. Many believe that this is the first ever image of a black man and a white man in an embrace.

That crucial home run, and this picture, may never have happened if it wasn't for Doby's tryout with the Newark Eagles at Hinchliffe Stadium in 1942; a day that would change Larry Doby's live forever.

On this day…

October 2, 1933 - On this date, approximately 15,000 silk workers arrived at Hinchliffe Stadium for a labor meeting. At this time, silk laborers were entering their fifth week of a work stoppage. The meeting, which was organized by the American Federation of Labor, was followed by a parade through Paterson. The strike would finally end in December of 1933.
