“Audrey”

Acrylic and film celluloid (“Always” 1989) on canvas

“Always” is a 1989 romantic fantasy film directed by Steven Spielberg, featuring Audrey Hepburn in her final film role. In this movie, she portrays Hap, an angel who guides the protagonist, Pete Sandich (played by Richard Dreyfuss), after his death. Hepburn’s appearance, though brief, is memorable for its grace and poignancy.

Hepburn’s participation in “Always” was significant, as she had largely retired from acting by the late 1980s, choosing to focus on humanitarian efforts. Her cameo in this film was a rare return to the screen. Notably, she donated her entire salary of $1 million from the film to UNICEF, reflecting her deep commitment to charitable work.

“Always” is a remake of the 1943 film “A Guy Named Joe,” with the setting updated from World War II to a modern aerial firefighting operation. The film also stars Holly Hunter, John Goodman, and Brad Johnson. While it received mixed reviews upon release, Hepburn’s performance was widely appreciated, adding a touch of elegance to the production.

After completing “Always,” Hepburn took on only two more entertainment-related projects: the PBS documentary series “Gardens of the World with Audrey Hepburn,” for which she was posthumously awarded an Emmy, and a spoken word album, “Audrey Hepburn’s Enchanted Tales,” which earned her a posthumous Grammy.

“Always” remains a notable part of Audrey Hepburn’s legacy, marking the end of her illustrious film career and highlighting her enduring dedication to humanitarian causes.
