“V for Victory”
Stainless steel Porsche hood, acrylic paint, 2775 black-and-white dice

This work of art features, Steve McQueen, is inspired by the 1971 racing film “Le Mans.”

The 1971 racing film follows the American driver, Michael Delaney, as he competes in the legendary 24 hour Le Mans endurance race in France. Unlike most sports movies, the film has very little dialogue and focuses heavily on realistic, racing footage, capturing the intensity, danger, and atmosphere of the endurance race. McQueen, who was a real racing enthusiast, wanted the film to feel as authentic as possible, so it features real race, cars, and footage shot at high speeds on the actual circuit.

This work of art is currently on exhibition at Cicada Fine Art, for additional information please do not hesitate to email info at cicada fine Art or call us at 442-268-9259.

A Magenta Robe, A Rose Robe (diptych)

By Jim Dine
Etching and aquatint with hand coloring on two sheets of wove paper, 1979
Published by Pace Editions, New York
D’Oench & Feinberg, 56.

Dine is inspired by the power of simple images to be both familiar and symbolic. His repetitions of tools, bathrobes, or hearts are easily understood by the viewer, while also suggesting deeper layers of meaning. He often works with subjects and images from his childhood, giving his work both a sense of innocence and shared nostalgia. Jim Dine has created a vocabulary out of subjects that have a child-like appeal, such as tools, birds, and hearts. These personally nostalgic symbols are also commonplace and universal, creating work that is both autobiographical and open to interpretation. Dine was also instrumental in the first “Happenings,” a progenitor of Performance art. These Happenings challenged the seriousness and elitism of Abstract Expressionism, de-emphasizing the art object in favor of a performative, interactive, process. Over his career, Dine has both questioned the status of the artwork and continued a tradition of making work full of symbolism and allegory.

Dine’s work is held in more than 70 important public collections worldwide, including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; The Art Institute of Chicago; The Cleveland Museum of Art; Hakone Open-Air Museum, Hakone-machi, Japan; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Musée national d’art moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Stedelijk Museum; Amsterdam; Tate Gallery; London; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Everyone have an amazing Mimi Modernism!

Stop by Cicada Fine Art and view our incredible collection of original midcentury inspired painting by Kaline Carter!

In addition we have secured six of his works of art fresh from their exhibition at Gray Matter Museum, in San Clemente.

After a brief stint at Parsons School of Design in the early 1990s, Kaline Carter found himself in a creative dry spell for about two decades. Around 2017, he began looking at everyday scenes differently—particularly glimpses of architecture, aerial views of cities and farmland, and shapes found in nature–and soon he picked up a sketchbook. He was fascinated with the vast universe of color combinations that can be applied to patterns and his sketchbook was filling up. In early 2019, he started researching painting techniques with acrylic on canvas and found many ways to paint hard-edge geometric paintings. He ran into more influential artists like Ellsworth Kelly, Frederick Hammersley, Carmen Herrera, Agnes Martin, Ad Reinhardt, and Barnett Newman. Carter considers them to be his teachers, and has taken a bit from each of their practices. By paring down observations of the world around him, and then applying the techniques he’s learned while studying his favorite artists, Carter has found a style he is completely comfortable working in.
