Eve Awakening by Judithe Hernández, one of the leading voices of the Chicano art movement. In this richly colored screenprint, a reclining female figure emerges within a dreamlike aquatic world of koi, branching forms, and a vivid red hand. The imagery suggests creation, renewal, temptation, and spiritual awakening.

Featured print: David Avery, "Death and the Printmaker," 2021.

A skeleton looks over a printmaker's shoulder as he works at the press. Avery took the title from the writings of Bruno Schulz, and as the etching progressed he came to think of it as a summation of his work to that point, with quotations from earlier prints worked in.

A small boat overloaded with figures absorbed in their devices, a tree rising from the mast, and below the waterline a fish assembled from discarded objects. Avery's etching shares its title with Sebastian Brant's 1494 satire and uses the same premise to look at the present day.

Born in Osaka and working in Oregon, Hiratsuka builds his prints plate by plate, layering etched color and chine collé into figures that echo ukiyo-e but speak with contemporary wit. Some rooms hold more than books — they hold entire universes.

Erik Desmazières' "La Bibliothèque de Babel" is a series of etchings created in 1997 to illustrate Jorge Luis Borges' celebrated story "The Library of Babel." Originally produced for a fine press edition with Le Livre Contemporain and Les Bibliophiles Franco-Suisses, the etchings capture an infinite, labyrinthine library in astonishing architectural detail.

A contemplative angelic figure, wings unfurled, reaches toward her own face amid a constellation of painted orbs and tangled barbed wire. A watchful crow looks on. Yuji Hiratsuka's "Meteor Ride" (2025) is an etching with chine collé that draws on ukiyo-e tradition and Zen philosophy, holding the familiar and the fantastical in the same breath — an image that resists easy resolution and rewards a second look.
