Antique Thai Chedi Reliquary.
A finely carved and turned hardwood stupa form, constructed as a reliquary box in a stupa shape. This form is composed of a squat bell shaped dome on a circular tiered base. The finial spire serving as the lid has multiple rings tapered culminating in a lotus bud spire. The tight fitting box lid joins at the top of the bell form with a small carved out receptacle in the interior of the bell. Red lacquered overall and gold leafed. Stupa form reliquaries were historically made to enshrine relics (remnants) of the Buddha or revered acolytes, disciples, teachers, texts and sacred objects. Often reliquaries such as this are devotional objects given to local temples to enshrine or held in or displayed in a home altar.
