Brent Learned is an award-winning Cheyenne and Arapaho artist working in drawing, painting and sculpture. His work is deeply influenced by the heritage, culture and history of American Plains tribes. In his pieces on exhibit in “Records and Renderings,” Learned has taken historical envelopes from the White House post office and added his mark. Rather than altering their historical significance, the artwork creates a dialogue between America’s political history and the enduring presence of Native American history. The imagery honors the cultures, traditions and resilience of the Cheyenne and Arapaho people while allowing these rare White House artifacts to tell a broader American story.
