Chickasaw citizen Emma Alcazar is a Virginia-based quilter and fiber artist. "I focus most on my identity and what I've felt growing up Chickasaw in Oklahoma," says Alcazar. "I’m inspired by spending time in nature and reimagining traditional shapes and motifs into fabric to communicate my emotions." Ronnie Morris finds inspiration within the history and culture of his Cherokee heritage. For him, creativity is an essential part of his life. “It has been said that one doesn’t choose to be an artist; it chooses us,” says Morris. “Making art is like the comfort of returning home after a long trip.” In our current featured exhibition, “Records and Renderings,” Morris’ earrings incorporating ledger documents reflect a legacy of Cherokee inventiveness and cultural expression.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in the gallery this past Saturday for a special basket weaving workshop with Chickasaw artist Sue Fish! Participants spent the afternoon learning the art of basket weaving and creating their own handwoven baskets to take home.
