Beadwork has long been a powerful way for Indigenous artists to share stories, honor traditions, and express cultural identity. Designs, colors, and patterns often carry personal, familial, and tribal significance, connecting generations through creativity and tradition.

Before glass beads were introduced through trade, Indigenous artists adorned clothing and regalia with materials such as shells, bones, stones, and porcupine quills. Today, beadwork continues to evolve while honoring the knowledge and artistry passed down through generations.

The story of Oklahoma begins with its name. Derived from the Choctaw words okla (people) and humma (red), Okla Humma translates to “Red People” or “Humans.”

Proposed by Choctaw Chief Allen Wright in 1866, the name honors the Indigenous nations whose cultures, traditions, and contributions have shaped this land for generations. More than a place name, Oklahoma is a reflection of a rich and enduring Indigenous legacy.
