“Faces of the Mother Road: The Lost Portraits of S.J. Tyler” opens October 16th 📸

This exhibit displays the photographs of Oklahoma photographer S.J. Tyler, whose Afton studio photographed the daily lives and extraordinary diversity that flourished along Route 66 between 1913-1950.

This exhibit will be on view through the end of April 2027

The histories, stories, and cultures of Oklahoma cannot be told without the histories, stories, and cultures of Indigenous peoples.
It’s the Oklahoma History Center Museum’s honor and responsibility to share these experiences throughout our galleries and resources, including the replica of Pawnee Star Chart pictured here.
The star chart showcased in the center of the gallery is derived from the Skidi band of the Pawnee Nation. This image, which originated from a sacred bundle at the Chicago Field Museum, was used by the Pawnee for everything from predicting when to hunt and when to perform certain ceremonies to telling the origin story of the Pawnee people.

Celebrating October also means celebrating this object, which first became available to the public on October 1, 1908. Not the first of its kind but certainly the best known, it paved the way for life as most Americans know it today.
