Thirty organizations across Oklahoma will receive a combined $509,439 through the Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program, the Oklahoma Historical Society’s primary tool for supporting grassroots history and preservation efforts statewide.

Funded projects include restoring an 1840s Mountain Howitzer, digitizing historic newspapers and athletic film reels, improving archival storage, developing living history programs, and preserving historic structures across the state. These grants help local organizations collect, preserve, and share Oklahoma’s stories for future generations.

Applications for the next grant cycle open January 1, 2027.

🎉 It’s our birthday! 🎉

The Oklahoma Historical Society was founded on May 27, 1893, by members of the Territorial Press Association to preserve newspapers. Over the years, the OHS has developed numerous collections, programs, research centers, museums, historic homes, and military sites across the state. All of this helps us fulfill our mission to collect, preserve, and share the history and culture of the state of Oklahoma and its people.

Memorial Day, formerly called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance to honor the men and women who died while serving in the United States military.

This day originated after the American Civil War to recognize fallen soldiers and to decorate their graves. Today, we honor all the fallen heroes who died in service to our country.

Kate Barnard was born on this day in 1875. In 1907, Kate Barnard made history by becoming the first woman elected to a major statewide office in Oklahoma—a time when women did not even have the right to vote. She served as the state’s first Commissioner of Charities and Corrections.

Today, the Oklahoma Historical Society Research Division preserves several documents by Kate Barnard, including her typewritten diary and a campaign document she distributed during her run for office.
