The Henry and Anna Overholser Mansion is a house museum showcasing the life of the Overholser family Tours times: Tuesday-Thursday, 10am, noon, and 2pm.

Reservations are required for those times. On Friday and Saturday, drop-in tours are available from 10am-3pm. No reservation required. Henry Overholser was an 1889er who earned the title of "Father of Oklahoma City: as a man of modest wealth who was involved in almost every aspect of the city's growth from 1889-1903. The year the mansion was built he was listed in the city directory as "Overholser

, H...Capitalist," and that does sum up his career, he was an entrepreneur who built "imposing structures" in the heart of the city; he persuaded the Frisco Railroad to build its line into Oklahoma City instead of Guthrie. In the area of political life, he served as County Commissioner, as County Finance Officer during the Panic of '97, and had been one of the "Committee of Seven" which settled land disputes during April-May, 1889. The State Fair of Oklahoma was another one of his favorite accomplishments. So respected was he that, on the afternoon of his funeral in August 1915, even the city and county offices--as well as the downtown businesses--closed. In 1901, Mr. Overholser bought three city lots on Northwest 15th street, "out in the country" for about $2000 each at the time when the City limits of Oklahoma City ended at around NW 6th Street. The Queen Ann styled mansion is almost 11,000 square feet designed by Kansas City architect, W.S. Matthews, a graduate of Kensington Academy, London. Many items are original to the earliest days of the mansions; several decorative objects were acquired by Mrs. Overholser between 1915 and 1940; some were added during the occupancy of the Perry's.

Today would be the 100th wedding anniversary for Henry Ione Overholser and David Jay Perry. They were married on the second floor landing of the Overholser Mansion. We will be open tomorrow at 10 am, 12 pm and 2 pm. Tickets can be reserved at OverholserMansion.org.

Looking at brush strokes that were made 123 years ago…never gets old. These beautiful canvas covered walls were hand painted by an artist from London, who spent 18 months painting in the mansion.

We are often asked where the Overholsers are buried. They are buried at Fairlawn Cemetery, one of Oklahoma City’s oldest cemeteries. It’s the final resting place of many early Oklahoma City residents. William Skirvin, builder of the Skirvin Hotel, is buried across from them. Henry, Anna, Henry Jr, Henry Ione and David Perry are all buried in this family plot.

We said last year we think Henry Overholser would be a big Thunder fan. He built the Overholser Opera House, which would have essentially been the first arena, hosting plays, music acts, boxing matches—not just operas. And he was pro OKC, and was said to base most of his business decisions on whether it was good for the city. We had some fun with AI to celebrate the Thunder game tonight—with absolutely no disrespect intended toward Henry. Let’s go Thunder!
