Letโ€™s Talk Turkey - ๐Ÿฆƒ

From dancing to bowling, from negotiations to nerds, from film failures to drug rehab, the bird is the word.
- By Jim Kempton

Thanksgiving is Americaโ€™s national stuffing day.

It is the one holiday each year when overeating is considered patriotic. Itโ€™s not just that we eat too much. We do that most days of the week.

But on Thanksgiving, as Johnny Carson once said, we travel all across the country to be with people we only see once a year. And then discover once a year is way too often.

Turkey has become far more than a bird we eat at our annual feast day, when we take time to count our blessings. The word has inserted itself in a veritable slew of slang phrases referencing arcane activities of all sorts.

Why is kicking a habit called going Cold Turkey?

(For years I thought it meant using leftovers in a sandwich.)
Who came up with the idea of Talking Turkey?

When did people dance the Turkey Trot? Or hold a Turkey Shoot?

Where does the name come from anyway?

What does the bird turkey have to do with the nation Turkey?

(They ARE related.) And why do we call a failed movie or an inept, dislikable person a Turkey?

Even more mysteriously, how the heck did bowling three strikes become known as a turkey?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY - Donald Takayama
The Shaping of a Surfing Legend ๐Ÿค™

It can be said that something becomes โ€œmagicalโ€ by its effect and the resulting charmed condition it imbues upon the beholder.

The term has often been applied to describing certain surfboards. When a surfer acquires a surfboard that stands apart from all others they have owned, they often refer to it as their โ€œmagic board,โ€ though on dry land, it might look no different than other boards. To see the magic, you must have the right rider. Then, add water.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY - DUKE BOYD! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿค™๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Duke Boyd, founder of Hang Ten, was born in Kansas City in 1934 and spent his youth in Los Angeles, Hawaii, and Panama. He discovered surfing at age 12 in Waikiki.

In 1960, Boyd collaborated with seamstress Doris Boeck to create a durable pair of surf trunks he designed. These innovative "boardshorts," built to endure the demands of surfing, quickly became popular among surfers and beach enthusiasts along the California coast, marking the birth of the Hang Ten brand.

Throughout the following decade, Hang Ten's signature horizontal stripes and vibrant, personality-driven ad campaigns made a major impact on the surf industry. Boyd sold the brand in 1970 and later contributed to the success of Lightning Bolt.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ๐Ÿ˜€ John Richards, aka โ€œL.J.โ€ (Little John)

OUR NEWEST ๐Ÿ‘‘
L.J.'s surfing journey spans six decades! At Oceanside High School, he became fast friends with legendary surfer Phil Edwards, known as โ€œThe Guayule Kid,โ€ who was shaping and selling balsa surfboards. L.J.'s mom bought him one of Phil's boards, which he used to win the 1963 U.S. Championships men's title in Huntington Beachโ€”a board he still treasures today..
