Today, the California Surf Museum celebrates a surf icon whose effortless flow, soulful style, and unmistakable presence have inspired generations of wave riders.

Born October 16, 1973, and raised in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Rob helped show the world that how you ride a wave can be just as memorable as the wave itself. From competitive surfing to the creative freedom of freesurfing, his connection to the ocean continues to capture the spirit of surf culture.

Here’s to another year of smooth lines, beautiful waves, and sharing the stoke.

Woody Holds A Special Place In Our Museum’s Story. Seeing Him Walking Along Grandview Beach In Leucadia Inspired Stuart Resor To Help Preserve Surfing’s Early History—An Idea That Helped Spark The California Surf Museum!

The California Surf Museum Mourns The Loss Of Legendary Hawaiian Surfer Larry Bertlemann, Affectionately Known As "The Rubberman." 🤙

A True Pioneer Of Modern Surfing, Larry Helped Revolutionize The Sport During The 1970s With His Radical, Skate-Inspired Maneuvers, Incredible Flexibility, And Fearless Approach To Riding Waves.

Known For His Signature Style, Deep Turns, And Innovative Surfing Techniques, Larry Inspired Generations Of Surfers And Helped Shape The Future Of Progressive Surfing.

His Influence Extended Far Beyond The Waves, Leaving A Lasting Mark On Surf Culture, Skateboarding, And The Evolution Of The Sport We Love.

Larry Passed Away On October 10, 2026, At The Age Of 71, Following Complications From A Heart Attack In Honolulu, Hawaii.
