First Friday ArtFact:
In 1798, Napoleon Bonaparte lost his Egyptian Campaign due to British ships destroying his supply boats. A century later, Bourgain portrayed the legendary French general on a terrace overlooking Cairo with his deputies grouped nearby. Notice how the artist isolates the figure of Bonaparte and paints him slightly at middle distance to further emphasize his solitary and agonizing decision on whether to concede defeat. A second element of the painting is the harsh desert light; note how light and shadow visually cut the figure of Bonaparte off from the rest of the figures and serves to almost spotlight his downfall. Meanwhile in the right foreground, his faithful deputies in full military dress patiently await Bonaparte's pronouncement, despite one man having to mop his brow in the extreme heat.

Bourgain formally studied under Gérôme and Édourd Detaille. He exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français beginning in 1880 and also sent engravings to the Royal Academy in London. Known for his Orientalist and military subjects, Bourgain also worked as a painter with the French Navy where he created many humorous genre scenes.

Gustave Bourgain (French, 1855-1921)
Le Général Bonaparte au Caire, 1798 (General Bonaparte in Cairo, 1798), 19th century
Oil on canvas, 28 x 41 in.

We love hearing the stories behind the photos — how about you?

Sloshing around through the lush green summer swamps of Florida fills me with a deep joy of being alive. There is something primeval about it. With mysterious names of plants like Guzmania and Ghost Orchid, I was easily enticed into exploring the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park. Studded with native Royal Palms and many tropical plants found only in Central America, the Fakahatchee is truly a remarkable place.

On the second floor in our exhibition "The Heart's Yearning," take a moment to appreciate the detail of this dress by Inna’s Designs. The historical representation of an era of feminine grace and beauty is what drew Inna to “The Meeting” for her fashion inspiration.

Hosted in partnership with Ocala Culinary Festival, High Design: Art, Fashion & Food featured a couture runway show in which seven designers showed looks from their collection, and one garment inspired by an object in our permanent collection. Now through July 28, we are pleased to have these inspired garments on view in the galleries next to the objects that inspired them.

First Friday Art Fact:
Gelede is danced to honor and amuse the mothers and their powerful, life-giving forces which can turn destructive if not properly appeased. The carefully choreographed dance is done by men wearing elaborate regalia and cap masks (like the ones above), often carved with intentionally humorous themes, secured on top of their heads. Cap masks can also depict metaphorical animal figures, sewing machines, or goods sold in market stalls, since Yoruba women control the markets. The Appleton's Gelede masks exhibit intricate hairstyles and lineage marks on their cheeks.

One of three Inspired Fashions you'll find in the Asian galleries, this exquisite dress by Yong Lin was inspired by the motifs on our “Warrior Vase.” Yong created the spine down the back of the dress to symbolize the dragons and the overall soft look to symbolize the tigers. The color gold symbolizes prosperity and nobility.
