Storytime is our favorite time, especially when there’s art involved! Families had a fun time at our Museum & Me class earlier this week, led by Ruth Dexheimer. We love to see how much are youngest students grow!

The 65th season of the CF Ira Holmes International Film Series is kicking off with a screening of “Hamilton” (PG-13, USA, 2020, 2h 40m) on Tuesday, October 13 at 2 p.m. in the auditorium.

Presenting the tale of American founding father Alexander Hamilton, this filmed version of the original Broadway smash-hit musical tells America’s story then, told by America now, with original music by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Free for Appleton and film series members; included with admission fee for nonmembers. Seating is limited to 250 on a first-come basis.

This month’s First Friday ? Linemaxxing.

As an adolescent, Richard Zakin knew he wanted to be an artist but never anticipated pursuing ceramics. Zakin studied painting and printmaking at Syracuse University with George Vander Sluis (1915–1984) and at the Brooklyn Museum School under abstract landscape artist Reuben Tam (1916–1991) in the 1950s and 1960s. He pivoted to ceramics, earning his MFA at Alfred University, one of the top ceramic art programs in the country, where he studied with sculptor William Parry (1918–2004) as well as Val Cushing (1931–2013) and Daniel Rhodes (1911–1989). He went on to teach at SUNY Oswego and authored numerous technical articles and books on the craft of ceramics and guides for utilizing the electric kiln.

Zakin’s works were influenced by several of the mid- and late-20th-century painting movements. He had studied with Richard Pousette-Dart (1916–1992), one of the founders of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, and incorporated graffiti art that became popularized in the 1970s and 1980s by artists such as Keith Haring (1958–1990) and Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988). “Substrate 1” and “Soft Pillow Form 1” merge urban and landscape qualities with abstract elements of shape, space, texture and surface, using sgraffito to create their intricate designs. His works also explore one of the most enduring questions in modern and contemporary ceramics: where does two-dimensional art end and three-dimensional art begin?

These works are currently on view through January 17 in the exhibition “Approaches: Abstract Art.”
