Today is the last day to experience "Across The Atlantic: American Impressionism Through The French Lens," an immersive exhibit with masterworks by artists that developed American Impressionism around the turn of the century. This exhibition examines French Impressionists, Americans Living in France, New York Impressionists, Philadelphia Impressionists, Barbizon School, Bucks County, Cos Cob, Old Lyme, New Hope and Massachusetts Art Colonies. Within each of these colonies, artists were able to teach, collaborate and escape the daily rigors of their city studios. Often located in scenic locations within striking distance of major cities, artists’ colonies served up steady doses of natural beauty and provided ample subject matter.

Make sure to experience a style that changed the world and journey "Across The Atlantic" today.

First Friday Art Fact:
This decorative vase depicts beloved Japanese folk-hero Benkei fighting legendary samurai Minamoto Yosh*tsune. Gifted with enormous strength, Benkei beat every warrior he challenged at the Gojo bridge and captured their swords as prizes. He had already taken 999 swords and was seeking his 1,000th when he was beaten by Yosh*tsune. So impressed that someone could beat him, Benkei then became a loyal follower of Yosh*tsune.

During the Meiji Restoration, former sword makers began creating decorative metal sculptures with the same attention to detail and fine materials that they had used for weaponry. The Miyao Company of Yokohama, founded by sculptor Miyao Eisuke, was one of the companies that flourished during this time. The Miyao Company's depictions of traditional Japanese themes and legends appealed to both native Japanese buyers who recognized the themes and European and American patrons in search of "exotic" and exquisitely crafted luxury goods.

At the turn of the 20th century, Charles Webster Hawthorne discovered Provincetown, Massachusetts. It was a quiet fishing village on the tip of Cape Cod that it had the same luminous quality of light as the European coastal towns which was favored by the French Impressionists. He established the Cape Cod School of Art in 1899 which was the first American school dedicated solely to the ideals of Impressionist painting.

There’s always something new to discover at the Appleton. Peppermint is enjoying these tiny, detailed netsuke in the Asian galleries. Netsuke are not only miniature works of art, but functional! They were used as small anchors for small, nested containers that hung from an obi sash. Two of the most commonly used materials for netsuke were ivory and wood.

DID YOU KNOW "A Study In White" by Charles Webster Hawthorne is dedicated to Hawthorne’s teacher and professional role model, William Merritt Chase. It bears the inscription: “To My Master Wm. M. Chase.” Hawthorne enrolled in Chase’s summer school at Shinnecock Hills, Long Island in 1896. There, the artist served as his chief assistant.
Several years later, Hawthorne established his own summer school, the Cape Cod School of Art, which attracted plein air painters to Provincetown for the next three decades.
