“My paintings are abstract and rooted in color. This series explores natural environments, looking for hidden structural threads in submerged grids of oyster farms or labyrinthian shapes of branching trees. I am mapping estuaries and woods looking for underlying patterns in the flicker of constant movement and change. I am seeking to mark moments to capture a feeling of enchantment”.

Honoring the power of softness and vulnerability, Franco pays tribute to the often invisible and systemically undervalued domestic labor and love women have long contributed to their communities.

SLATE is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Zoe Huey at the Oakland City Center. On view now until September 30, 2026. ⁠

"My paintings live as dances in the same way my body archives memory. My paintings are made up of many layers and the materiality of oil paint aids in the slow evolution of each piece. Layer by layer I add, scrape away and apply more paint. I define and blur shapes, revealing parts of the painting while others become nearly invisible. My process is one of moving forward and returning, moving forward and returning. I delight in this scrambling of orientation, akin to a body’s play with gravity. Layers of the painting root over time into well-worn spatial and temporal contexts, concealing and revealing a part of the final image. With each layer, the world of the painting breaks open unto itself, establishing itself as a present moment within its own history. To offer a physical and visible sense of history is to acknowledge that something has happened." -Zoe Huey
