We promote understanding and historical healing in a diverse and changing community, giving voice to the many cultures that have created–and are still transforming–California. The mission of Friends of Peralta Hacienda Historical Park is to promote understanding, historical healing and community amid change and diversity. We present and interpret the untold history of the Peralta rancho and the stories of the Fruitvale community today, giving voice to the many cultures that have created - and are still transforming - California. The six-acre park and historic house form an arts and educational hub for local families and youth, and regional center for historical inquiry and discovery.

Today is Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to recognize the Indigenous peoples of this land and the cultures, languages and communities that continue to thrive. 🌿

Here in the East Bay, that means the Ohlone, whose presence stretches back at least 22,000 years and whose language, Chochenyo, is being revived and spoken today. It also means the many Indigenous communities who now call Fruitvale home, including Mien, Mam, Khmer and Native families from across the country, each carrying their own languages and traditions forward.

Indigenous history is not only something that happened long ago. It is present, it is evolving, and it is all around us.

If you’d like to take part in the day, you can visit Indigenous Voices, our new park-wide exhibition created with Ohlone artists and culture bearers, at Peralta Hacienda Historical Park, 2465 34th Ave, Oakland.

Big day at the Peralta House Museum! We spent it installing a brand new exhibition, part of "Indigenous Voices," a park-wide transformation centering the history, presence, and resurgence of the Ohlone people of the East Bay.

Come see it for yourself at our community celebration on Saturday, October 10 from 12 to 3 PM. Expect hands-on activities for the whole family and exhibition tours led by our curator, Holly Alonso.

We are thrilled to announce that Indigenous Voices opens to the public next month, the weekend before Indigenous Peoples Day. Join us as we celebrate the grand opening of this park-wide exhibition centering the history, presence, and resurgence of the Ohlone people.

Walk along Peralta Creek to see SII, a new sculpture by Walter Hood, a MacArthur Fellow, and Wondrous Weaves, a 100-ft mural bench painted with the traditional textiles Fruitvale families brought from their own cultures. Visit Linda Yamane’s Ohlone Basketry Garden, explore contemporary stories of Ohlone folks, and catch the premiere of “Who Did the Work?,” Rick Tejada Flores’s new short film exploring forced labor during the colonial period, and more!

Curator Holly Alonso will be giving exhibition tours during the event. We will also have hands-on activities all afternoon: weave a corn husk doll, try your hand at lassoing, make a leather pouch, and learn Ohlone songs. Free and family friendly, all ages welcome.

That’s what went home with Oakland families at our weekend Back to School Resource Fair! 🎉

Today, a fire broke out at the Peralta House Museum. We are relieved to share that no one was injured and the damage, while significant, was contained.

A few important updates:

1. ACE Camp continues as usual. Camp areas were unaffected and remain safe for kids.
2. Museum open hours are paused for the week while we air out the building. We'll update you when we're ready to welcome guests back.

This incident is a sobering reminder of how precious and vulnerable places like this are. The Peralta House Museum is not just a building. It's where our community comes to discover, question, and connect with the complicated, layered story of Oakland.

Historic landmarks need a community behind them. If you believe this place deserves to be protected and passed down to future generations, please consider supporting us today.

We'll be clearing invasive grasses 🌾, picking up litter 🗑️, and planting tule and dogbane 🌱 two native plants with deep roots in Indigenous basket-making traditions.
