This is what a thriving hive looks like: bees streaming in and out, each one on a mission. 🐝

Our hive at Peralta Hacienda Historical Park is alive and buzzing thanks to the dedication of our awesome volunteer, Melody. She has spent countless hours gardening around the park and working to reestablish this very hive. 🌿💛

What you're seeing at the hive entrance isn't chaos. It's a highly organized system. 🤯 Forager bees return loaded with pollen and nectar while guard bees check who's coming in. Every single bee has a role, and together they keep the colony, and our gardens, thriving. 🌸

This hive is part of our ongoing work to support bees and nurture our pollinator garden. 🌻

What an amazing day! This past Saturday, on April 25, Peralta Hacienda Historical Park was alive with community energy from the creek banks to the upper park.

🌿 CREEK RESTORATION IN THE LOWER PARK

Our Water Keepers program and volunteers got their hands in the soil, planting new riparian plants along the banks of Peralta Creek and sheet mulching along the creek corridor and in front of our mural bench. Joining us were the Frontline Catalysts and Trees for Oakland (), who planted five new buckeye trees, deepening the park’s roots and its connection to the land.

🎉 RESOURCE FAIR & DÍA DE LOS NIÑOS IN THE UPPER PARK

Simultaneously, the upper park buzzed with celebration! Community organizations were on hand sharing vital resources and information with our neighbors. And in honor of Día de los Niños, we celebrated the children in our community: gifting toys, distributing groceries, and sharing pajamas with families who needed them.

Days like these remind us why this park matters as a place of healing, restoration, and community care.

Thank you to every volunteer, partner organization, and community members who made April 25 so special. We’ll see you at the park!

🌿 What a day at Lake Chabot!

Our Welcome to Wildlife crew hit the trails with wide eyes and big energy. Kids explored, hiked, played games by the lake, and learned about the local wildlife that call the Bay Area home 🐦

Field trips to regional parks 🌲 and nature areas are a core part of the W2W curriculum, because we believe getting kids outside and into nature isn’t just fun, it’s healing. There’s something powerful about a child discovering the natural world on their own terms.

But the real showstopper? The mobile aquarium 🐟 packed with fish species native to the Bay Area. The kids got up close with creatures they’d never seen before… and some even got to dissect fish for the first time!

Learning that feels like an adventure? That’s what we’re here for. 💚

Fourteen years and the joy never gets old. 💛

Saturday’s Khmer New Year Festival brought over 1,500 people to Peralta Hacienda Historical Park, including elders and youth, dancers in silk-woven sampot, Buddhist monks, vendors, and friends old and new, all celebrating together under the Oakland sun.

Every year this festival reminds us of the strength and beauty of the Khmer diaspora, and this year was no exception.

If you’ve never heard of Water Keepers, here’s the heart of it:

Water Keepers brings Oakland youth into a season of hands-on environmental stewardship, not just to learn about nature, but to build a relationship with it. Through creek restoration, land care, and park maintenance, they develop real-world skills while deepening their connection to the place they call home. They work as a team, strengthen their sense of responsibility to community, and learn what it truly takes to care for a public green space that serves thousands of neighbors each year.

This fall, the cohort focused on urban forestry. Over 13 Saturdays, they trained with tree specialist Genaro and went deep into what caring for trees in a city actually involves. They learned tree anatomy and species identification, safety protocols, proper tool use, pruning techniques, and how to assess tree health. They practiced with professional equipment and developed the judgment and communication skills needed to work safely and effectively outdoors.

By the end of the session, they weren’t just learning about trees, they were maintaining them. The cohort closed out the season by planting three heirloom fruit trees that had long been missing from our orchard: a Meyers lemon, a Black Mission fig, and a Satsuma plum. Their work helped restore a piece of the park’s living history.

Water Keepers is about more than planting days. It’s about preparing young people with practical skills, environmental knowledge, and leadership experience they can carry into future jobs, education, and community work. And this fall cohort showed exactly what that looks like. 🌳🌿
