thejewelgeek Hello and welcome back to The Jewel Geek. It’s Brinder here, and today we are once again joined by Solomon Treasure, based in New York City.

We begin by discussing two remarkable objects by Mellerio, one of Europe’s most renowned jewellery maisons. We examine a jewelled horse carved from lapis lazuli and a polo player carved from obsidian, both crafted using precious materials such as gold, diamonds, and enamel.

We also take a look at an extraordinary clock created in 1850 by Louis Constantin Detouche, the official clockmaker to Paris and Napoleon III. The clock was showcased at the Great Exhibition in London and features stunning French Rococo Revival ormolu work, complete with sculptural cherub details.

I hope to see the brothers again very soon in NY.

Jewels for the dressing table of a Maharani.

An extraordinary Mughal style jade hand mirror and comb, intricately mounted in gold and set throughout with ruby-colored cabochons, India, late 19th century. Objects of this nature were created not merely for function, but as symbols of refinement, status, and beauty within the royal courts of India.

The delicacy of the carving, the richness of the jeweled ornamentation, and the intimate scale make this ensemble feel closer to a precious work of jewelry than decorative art.

An exceptionally rare survival.

A legendary horse suspended between sculpture and high jewelry.

Created by the historic House of Mellerio Paris circa 1991, this extraordinary one-of-a-kind work unites carved smoky quartz, rock crystal, gold, diamonds, jade, mother-of-pearl, and silver-gilt into a composition of remarkable theatricality and refinement. The rearing cheval emerges almost weightlessly from a monumental crystalline ground, adorned with jeweled mounts of exceptional craftsmanship.

At once sculpture, objet de vertu, and jewel, “Chevaux de Légende” represents the rare kind of modern French decorative art conceived without compromise — destined for the world’s finest interiors and important collections.
