An Exotic Encounter — William Skilling’s Monumental Giraffe

A striking and wonderfully theatrical work by William Skilling (American/British, 1862–1964), depicting a standing giraffe gracefully lowering its head to drink from a vessel offered by an Orientalist Nubian attendant.

At an impressive 60 × 60 inches, the painting commands a room with its extraordinary scale, vivid palette, and unmistakable sense of exoticism. Imperial Lacquer: A Monumental Pair from the Qianlong Period

An exceptional and exceedingly rare pair of monumental Chinese cinnabar carved lacquer vases dating to the Qianlong period (1736–1795).

Impressive in both scale and craftsmanship, each vase is intricately carved through layers of rich cinnabar lacquer with elaborate landscape scenes populated by figures amid mountainous terrain and architecture, surrounded by densely worked decorative borders.

Created during one of the greatest periods of artistic achievement at the Qing court, the pair exemplifies the extraordinary technical mastery and refinement associated with 18th-century Chinese imperial lacquerwork. Their survival as a matching pair makes them particularly remarkable.
