Repost from Rod Penner

I came across this scene just outside Austin around 7am on the Friday after Thanksgiving. We were driving home from Houston after spending the holiday with family. I’d forgotten my Fujifilm camera, so all I had was my iPhone 13. I probably took a hundred photos and later composed the final image from multiple views and closeups.⁣
⁣
You can’t photograph exactly what I’ve painted. I removed vehicles and signs, repositioned some of the puddles, and adjusted the color and values to more closely resemble how the place felt to me that morning. I liked the contrast between the dramatic sky, which I normally steer clear of, and the dreariness of the landscape.⁣
⁣
When it comes to composition, I’ll often squint and focus on the abstract qualities, or take off my glasses and see if the painting still holds up.⁣
⁣
Some viewers will inevitably project a narrative onto it, but I tend to resist that. I’m more interested in the image itself and what it evokes. For me, it brings back the feeling of riding the school bus as a kid in British Columbia, staring out the window and just observing.⁣
