Founded in 1956, the Friends of the Cabildo (FOC) is a local nonprofit organization that supports the Louisiana State Museum (LSM).

Supporting Louisiana's State Museum since 1956, Friends of the Cabildo is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing and sustaining this valuable cultural resource. The FOC assist the LSM through a variety of functions including providing volunteers and financial support to all State Museum properties in New Orleans and the state of Louisiana.

During the suffocating summer of 1853, yellow fever—the dread "Saffron Scourge"—claimed over 8,000 lives in New Orleans, wiping out a tenth of the city in a matter of months.

Become immersed in the horror of the epidemic with the residents of the 1850 House as they mourn their dead, cope with the ravages of the disease, and deal with the terror of the unknown.

The 1850 House is now “in mourning”

Some of the Victorian mourning traditions that you'll see in the month of October inside the 1850 House Museum. The house is open daily 9AM-4PM (last ticket sale 3:30 PM) $10.00 Adults ($8.00 Students & Louisiana residents)

• Mirrors are covered with black cloth so the spirits don’t get confused with images and “move on (heaven).”

• Clocks are stopped at the time of death.

• The deceased is laid out at home. It is called a “wake” as there will always be someone sitting with them. It is because people never knew if someone “actually” died.

• White is used for the deceased. White flowers too. A wicker casket could be used at home then the body is transferred to a coffin for burial. There is a prie dieu (Pray Dew) in front of the casket.

• A woman would wear all black clothing. Even underclothes could be black or trimmed in black. Men wore regular clothing but would wear a black arm band.

• There is no embalming, that did not happen till the Civil War.
