Hackley and Hume Historic Site The Hackley and Hume Historic Site preserves the homes of Muskegon's most well-known lumber barons
(1)

The Hackley and Hume Historic Site tells the story of two men who used their business educations, work experiences, and natural talents to take advantage of lumbering opportunities in Muskegon and build vast fortunes. They not only worked together, but built homes on the same piece of land. The homes feature many original stained glass windows, exquisite wood carving, and period furnishings.

🐴 Hold your horses! 🐴

According to the Fire Barn Rule Book, firefighters were prohibited from racing each other to a fire. Additionally, rule 16 stated, “Any company going to another company’s house at the time of a fire alarm shall not drive at a faster rate than six (6) miles an hour.”

In Observance of Memorial Day

The Muskegon Historic Sites are closed today as we honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country.

While we recently celebrated Hackley Day on May 16, today, however, May 25, is the official Hackley Day. Did you know the celebration even had its own song? 🎶

Printed in the Muskegon Chronicle in 1891, this song was part of the original festivities, capturing the spirit of the day and the community that came together to celebrate.

✨Hackley House Front Porch Restoration Update✨

The Hackley House front porch restoration took a big step forward last week as the team removed the old porch structure. This project has been years in the making, and over the last year, the craftspeople from Grand River Builders Inc. have been hand‑carving the signature Hackley-era details that will soon take their place.

With the old porch now cleared away, the next phase begins: building and installing the newly crafted porch, bringing those intricate carvings from the workshop to the front of the house.

More updates coming as the new porch takes shape.

A remarkable piece of Muskegon history has come home.

The Lakeshore Museum Center is proud to announce the return of the Hackley & Hume family and business records to Muskegon after more than 50 years at Michigan State University Libraries . Originally donated to MSU in 1974 by Jean Hume Browning, granddaughter of Thomas Hume, the collection includes 57 boxes, 172 volumes, and 12 film cans of photographs, maps, financial records, and business papers spanning nearly 100 years of Muskegon history.

These materials will provide new insight into the development of Muskegon, its people, industries, and natural resources while supporting future research, exhibits, and restoration work at the Hackley & Hume Historic Site.
