Fall classes started this week and we experienced so much joy this morning with Dr. Jackson's African American Studies class. Our intergenerational group that included the Mobile, AL AARP Chapter, started with an African Water Ceremony to honor the ancestors. Then, we danced and tasted traditional food together! Today, we send our condolences to the family and friends of Harry King.

Over the course of the last nine years, volunteers at the University of South Alabama's Center for Archaeological Studies and the Archaeology Museum worked closely with Harry King to study and help preserve an ancient canoe canal and associated sites in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Harry first came to the Archaeology Museum in 2017, in search of someone who would take a look at what was locally known as the "Indian Ditch," a nearly mile-long depression that once crossed Fort Morgan Peninsula to connect Oyster Bay with Little Lagoon.
Harry was convinced this was no simple ditch but rather an extraordinarily important ancient landscape feature, the result of a monumental engineering project undertaken centuries ago by the Indigenous residents of the Gulf Coast. Harry was a force of nature when it came to the ancient canal; nothing would have been accomplished without his passionate energy and persistence. After several invitations to accompany him on an inspection of the remaining visible portions of the canal, I finally met him on site in 2017. Harry was right to be impressed. The canal is indeed extraordinary, one of only seven such long-distance canals known from pre-contact America. I and the other volunteers feel privileged to have shared in that exploration with him. Harry King passed away on August 1st of this year, but future generations will be able to appreciate and learn from this highlight of the Gulf Shores landscape that Harry championed and helped to preserve.
