The Clotilda Reunion and Tourism Symposium was a partnership between Clotilda: The Exhibition at the Africatown Heritage House and Souls Grown Deep. The event was held at the River Gallery welcome center, against the backdrop of the Dinah Miller exhibit. Dinah Miller was a survivor of the Clotilda. Miller’s descendants reunited with Clotilda descendants from Africatown and Selma for this reunion.

A panel discussion was held that allowed Clotilda survivors to tell their family history. The event was held Sunday, May 3, 2026, during the Gee’s Bend May Day weekend. Prior to the panel discussion, Africatown and Selma descendants were given a tour of Gee’s Bend, learning about the rich history of quilting. During the day’s tour, they made stops at the Gee’s Bend Heritage Quilters gift shop, the Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy and Willie Quill’s restaurant for lunch.

This experience was designed to foster partnership between the two Clotilda communities. Representatives of the Dora Franklin Finley African-American Heritage Trail and Africatown Freedom Tours were also in attendance to give presentations about tourism in Africatown. Both communities are becoming sought after tourism destinations in Alabama. The Clotilda Reunion and Tourism Symposium was an effort to build a tourism trail that connects Africatown and Gee’s Bend, Alabama.

Both communities are anticipating working together on future projects to promote their unique stories.

Don’t miss your last chance to experience Juan Logan: Without Stopping! This monumental exhibition documents Logan’s profound exploration of the people and history of Africatown.

Why you have to see it:
- Intricate Depth: Multi-layered paintings with complex, tactile surfaces.
- Visual Language: Abstracted landscapes created through unique symbols and mapping.

We are deeply grateful to Juan Logan for his incredible contributions to the MMoA Permanent Collection.

While you're exploring his work this week, don't forget to visit Clotilda: The Exhibition at the Africatown Heritage House to see his piece, “Threads,” which is currently on view as part of the community's powerful narrative.

🎄 Merry Christmas from all of us at Africatown Heritage House! 🎄

To celebrate, we wanted to share our 3rd annual Christmas event photos and say a big THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this possible! To recap:

❄ Close to 450 people attended.
❄ Families were able to tour the exhibit for free and meet Santa.
❄ Darron Patterson with the Clotilda Descendant Association assisted in making sure Santa arrived this year. In addition to Santa, Mrs. Claus and a couple of Elves also made a special appearance!
❄ We had a special appearance from Victoria Howell and Alisyn Bonney. The Miss Juneteenth 2025-2026 Queen and contestants performed and greeted visitors in royal fashion.
❄ Other performers included pianist Frank Andre Forney, The Jackson Girls Choreographers, Mobile County Training School Trumpet player, and Melvin Jackson, who performed a host of Christmas tunes.
❄ The event was a lively as ever with an array of activities and vendors for children. The Barton Academy youth entrepreneurs set up booths and displayed their creations for sale.
