The Clotilda Reunion and Tourism Symposium was a partnership between Clotilda: The Exhibition at the Africatown Heritage House and Souls Grown Deep. The event was held at the River Gallery welcome center, against the backdrop of the Dinah Miller exhibit. Dinah Miller was a survivor of the Clotilda. Miller’s descendants reunited with Clotilda descendants from Africatown and Selma for this reunion.
A panel discussion was held that allowed Clotilda survivors to tell their family history. The event was held Sunday, May 3, 2026, during the Gee’s Bend May Day weekend. Prior to the panel discussion, Africatown and Selma descendants were given a tour of Gee’s Bend, learning about the rich history of quilting. During the day’s tour, they made stops at the Gee’s Bend Heritage Quilters gift shop, the Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy and Willie Quill’s restaurant for lunch.
This experience was designed to foster partnership between the two Clotilda communities. Representatives of the Dora Franklin Finley African-American Heritage Trail and Africatown Freedom Tours were also in attendance to give presentations about tourism in Africatown. Both communities are becoming sought after tourism destinations in Alabama. The Clotilda Reunion and Tourism Symposium was an effort to build a tourism trail that connects Africatown and Gee’s Bend, Alabama.
Both communities are anticipating working together on future projects to promote their unique stories.
