John L. LeFlore was a significant figure in Mobile County history. The film "A Quiet Revolution: The John L LeFlore Story," produced in 1996, tells the story of this Mobile icon. A Civil Rights leader and Executive Secretary for the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), LeFlore organized the Non-Partisan Voters League to continue the work of the of the NAACP. Among his many accomplishments, he was a key player in the desegregation of the public schools.

Join us for a special open house at the Historic Franklin House Gallery to celebrate the birthday of the trailblazing Black physician, Dr. James Alexander Franklin.

This crucial home served as a cornerstone of Mobile's civic and cultural life during the Jim Crow era, acting as a vital hub for educators, artists, and leaders.

Come explore this historic space, owned by Mobile County and run by the Dora Franklin Finley African American Heritage Trail, on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Commissioner Merceria Ludgood joined Mayor Stimpson and other city leaders to break ground on the $11 million Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue Complete Streets Project on Oct. 29. This is a major city investment aiming to enhance safety, walkability, and curb appeal along “The Avenue.”

This pending transformation complements Commissioner Ludgood’s efforts to create Mobile County's Civil Rights & Cultural Heritage District. Centered on Mobile’s historic Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, "The District" is a project to preserve local heritage while attracting new tourism, investment, and opportunity.

Completed Civil Rights & Cultural Heritage District assets include renovation of Dr. James Franklin's House, and through the City/County working together, the Historic Avenue Cultural Center and Isom Clemon Civil Rights Memorial Park.

Additional County projects in progress:
• Dave Patton house renovation to become a featured site and event space
• Crawford Law Firm will highlight Vernon Z. Crawford’s extraordinary legal legacy and share the stories of pivotal civil rights cases that helped shape the city.
• A public-private partnership to renovate the Ace Theater to create exhibit and event spaces.
• A historical context study adhering to National Park Service guidelines and providing context for grants and other applications.

The Mobile County Commission and District 1 Commissioner Merceria Ludgood were recently honored with Main Street Mobile’s Excellence in the Public Realm award, presented jointly with the City of Mobile for the County/City collaboration on the Isom Clemon Civil Rights Memorial Park, located at 520 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave.

This award celebrates transformational improvements to streets, sidewalks, and parks; projects that enhance pedestrian safety, create more inviting public spaces, and strengthen economic vitality.
