August’s full Moon put on an extra special show as it passed through Earth’s shadow during a deep partial lunar eclipse. At its peak just after midnight, nearly the entire Moon was immersed in Earth’s darkest shadow, giving viewers across South Florida a chance to see it take on a dramatic coppery glow.

Missed it? The science is still pretty stellar: a lunar eclipse happens when Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface. 🌎🌕

Once a year, coral on Florida's reef spawns under the summer moon, and it takes a whole community to turn that moment into new life. 🌙🪸

This year, we partnered with SECORE International for a coral spawning training at our Batchelor Environmental Center with Re5 Hub interns, building the CRIBs (Coral Rearing In-Situ Basins) used to raise hundreds of thousands of coral larvae at once.

From there, those corals move into our Marine Conservation WetLab and other partner locations for long-term care until they're ready to go back out onto the reef.

This is what collaboration for coral conservation looks like, and we're proud to do it together. 🐠

Did you know that Miami roads get so hot in the summer, they can practically cook breakfast? 🍳

Dr. Analisa Duran, our Knight Vice President of Education, left a cast iron pan outside to see just how hot Miami surfaces really get, and the results speak for themselves. If left for more time outside, that pan would've likely cooked the egg fully!

Next time you're out this summer, just know the sidewalk under your feet might be hot enough to fry an egg. ☀️

Something weird is brewing after dark... 🧪👻

Get ready for a spine-tingling night at the museum during nightLAB: Weird Science on Thursday, October 15, from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Adults 21+ can explore the museum after hours, including our upcoming special exhibition, The Science Behind Pixar. Plus, conduct eerie experiments, discover activations from community partners, compete in a costume contest, and enjoy spooktacular drinks and light bites from Constellation Florida.

Then head inside the Frost Planetarium for a cosmic journey through "Dark Universe", or immerse yourself in Danny Daze's ::BLUE::, a special audiovisual experience presented as part of the III Points satellite program.

And that's a wrap on our Digging Expeditions! ⛏️

This summer, eight incredible participants joined our Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology, Dr. Cary Woodruff, in Montana for a rare opportunity to experience paleontology firsthand in the field.

Participants worked alongside our paleontology team using the same tools and techniques as professionals to locate and carefully excavate dinosaur fossils. From learning how to identify fossils in the field to uncovering and preparing them for preservation, participants got a firsthand look at what it takes to bring fossils out of the ground and contribute to real scientific research.

A huge thank you to our team for making these expeditions possible, and to every participant who showed up ready to dig, learn and get a little muddy. 👏

Meet our blue-spotted slipper lobster (Parribacus antarcticus), a master of underwater camouflage! 🌊

Unlike their clawed cousins, slipper lobsters have flattened, paddle-like antenna and lack big claws. They use their broad plates to dig into sand and wedge into crevices, blending right in with their environment.
